Somewhere in the middle.
I absolutely adore these cars, wanted one before I bought my Peugeot but the prices were pretty steep considering what my budget was back then.

I made a thread before about cars for 5k which would be a nice pug306gti replacement but my eye always comes back to the Fiat Coupes.

This car for example is stunning

Cant help think these are a risky buy though.

does anyone have any experience of them here? or a bit of knowledge.

Just to satisfy my curiosity really

I agree they are stunning cars, there is one in red just up the road from me. Also, Whilst on the motorway I saw one go up in smoke (I know, How helpful am I :p) .

Your mental for wanting to spend £4k on one, if you look carefully you can buy one for half that.

The people that have had them from early on are starting to move on from them, I've seen two with around 100k miles 2-3 owners come through local dealers in the last couple of months.

I wouldnt want to spend 4k on one lol, I was just showing an example of an absolutely gorgeous one. Also, the plus ones demand more of a premium due to being far rarer, from what I gather.

That fairladyz is actually right up my street too, Id love a motor like that.

Maz you could come in handy for me one day I hope, when the time comes for me to get a car I might see what you can source :)

3.0 Twin Turbo V6 whats not to like? hehe.

200sx also but i think there more expensive......

I was offered a Silvia S15 R in part ex for my CTR EP3, but i wanted a DC5. I was tempted................. they are ace.

Awesome cars, I love mine. Sadly it's starting to show it age, and I am in two minds as to weather I should spend lots more money or move on

I love them, real character and pretty darn quick too!

Sadly however they are getting on a bit and are not the easiest cars to work on so expect it to be expensive to keep going. For its age I still think it looks incredibly fresh from the outside - to my eyes it rivals the Puma, Mk2 MR2 and FTO for title of 'most gracefully aged 90s motor'.

What kinda money have you spent on it already, can ya gimme a bit more indepth information on it :)

heart says yes, head says no

these are very expensive if they go wrong. i used to work in a bodyshop and remember ordering a cv joint for one once and it was megabucks and exchange. as the old joint was mangled in an accident it was even more of a hit.

They cost megabucks for a Fiat to run, compare it to a similiar aged BMW that would have cost the same new and costs £3k now and the running costs are probably very similiar.

It's a car I'd love to own, but I doubt will ever fit into my life (If I ever need a £3k car it'll go on something sensible, if I want something fun I'll spend more).

Get one from an owners club if possible, chances are they'll have done the standard prevention work to avoid any of the big bills (turbo related).

I went from MX5 to 20V turbo and back again to an MX5 when I realised how much they cost to run and wanted to buy my flat instead, it started seriously eating into my deposit! Loved the car though, lots of fun and the interior is the best I have ever sat in cosmetically, the Italianess of it all is very existent. Be warned though, this goes for its cost to run as well.

I certainly enjoyed mine until I "improved the aesthetics" :(.

They're very quick cars and put the power down surprisingly well. I bought mine as a disposable throw-away bit of fun; if you want to keep one in pristine condition it's going to cost a lot I'm sure. I'd hate to think what a new turbo or a top end rebuild would cost for instance.

Tread carefully, buy wisely, check out fccuk.org.

Oh and from what I've heard simply one of the best FWD setups ever, handling, putting the power down - you'll be amazed what the Coupe can do with FWD.

Had one 3 years ago love it really did! watch it though as the back end can go out v easy on these as that's how i lost mine pushing it a tiny bit too far! but its a amazing car to drive and still gets a lot of looks for a fiat and that 5c engine with that Garrett t28 turbo is a joy to listen to and never gets old!

I had mine for a little under 2 years and never had any problems with it! just the norm tyres oil etc!

Would def have one again someday! when i bought it mine was ruining stage 1 with pod slips of 0-60 in 5.9 and 1/4 in 13.9 they can be v quick!

This was my realistic dream car since they came out. I ended up buying a 20VT LE in 2006 and regretted it so much because it turned out to be a money pit. Everything about the car was fantastic, until it started going wrong hours after I bought it. I got rid of it after a couple of months as it was just ridiculous. Great cars if you dont buy a lemon, trouble is finding one that isnt a lemon!!

Hmm, I'd rather not add it up to be honest!

I bought it cheap with a blown engine (don't mess around with boost levels without checking fueling!), so had to rebuild it; new piston, rings, big end bearnings, gaskets, timing belt kit, water pump etc. I also rebuilt the turbo myself with a 360 degree thrust bearing. I guess this cost me £600 or so for parts, obliviously would have been far more if I couldn't do the work myself.

It's had a complete new front suspension; wishbones (they don't last long, especialy pattern parts), new Bilstein struts, top mounts, spring bearings, track rod ends, ARB links and bushes and I fitted a reconditioned steering rack a few months back. It's had two new wheel bearings, a front and a rear. The rear is a complete hub so quite expensive (£60 for a pattern part, double that for genuine). New bilstein dampers on the rear suspension. Full set of pads and discs (~£200) - and these are now nearing the end of their life ~30k on them.

New coolant hoses (genuine), Samco silicone boost hoses, new recirc valve (not a silly dump to atmosphere one, they don't run well with them). I had to weld up a big crack in the exhaust manifold (very, very common), and some time later the manifold gasket blew because the manifold was no longer perfectly flat. Could have had a gasket face milled flat, but luckily I managed to find a s/h uncracked manifold (like rocking horse poo) for £90.

Front tyres don't last long, at least not with my driving. I'm on my third set and these are almost gone.

OTOH it has been almost completely reliable, the only time it failed to start with when the starter motor failed a few weeks after I got it on the road, and I managed to bump start it fine. It has passed every MOT with no advisories, there have been no problems with electrics or rust.

It's a great car to drive, impressively quick for a small Fiat and averages about 28-29mpg on my commute, over 30mpg on a longer run. I have been racking my brains thinking of something to replace it with and come up with nothing I like so far - certainly not many cars give similar performance and economy at the same time.

If you are buying one start with the best example you can afford unless you actually enjoy working on cars.

Really? I have never noticed this at all, even lift off oversteer is quite hard to induce. Did you have ditchfinders on it?

One thing I have noticed; it's one of the most stable cars I have driven in standing water on motorways etc, I've never had it lose traction.

I looked at this a while back and ended up going for a 200sx instead.

The fiat looks are a bit marmite, but i did like them. what swung it for me was that the 200sx was RWD, more tuneable and more reliable. Horror stories of cracked manifolds and cambelt changes put me off the coupe quite a bit, the 200sx isnt flawless, but a lot easier and cheaper to work on!
