Fiber Issue - SeeTheLight

Hi Guys,

Independent Fiber Networks TA/ 'See The Light' provide my phone line & internet (50MB). No other providers currently service my development.

I've been living there over 4 years and had flawless service & speeds. Recently I was getting multiple disconnects on several devices (both mine & my housemates) and experiencing slow speeds.

I have been trying to resolve the issue with my ISP running ping tests and having recently had both my ONT & Router replaced. Initially speeds resumed normal performance but hours later had ground to a halt again.

It appears to be an intermittent problem as I can run a speedtest on a wireless device at 7AM and get 45-46MB down, the same as LAN. At other times I can have 45MB LAN but only 10-15MB Wireless. At around 9:30/10PM I am getting 5-10MB LAN at best :eek: At points plugged directly in to the ONT I was still only getting 10-15MB and a ping in excess of 30ms. I've tried speedtests with minimal devices connected for comparison and notice no real difference.

No difference between either of the routers and they are now going to send me another router... and if that fails another engineer visit.

I am not that well versed in the world of telecoms & networking but think it's highly likely not to be a hardware issue and down to something to do with the line or exchange. I asked if they throttle/traffic connections to which they replied they don't.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any suggestions as to what the cause or resolution could be?

(I can provide the results of my pingtests/packetloss/average ping if this would help)

Thanks in advance,

BennyC

To avoid confusion:

MB = megabyte
Mb = megabit

Is the speed always poor during peak periods?
Can you use your own router instead of the one provided by the ISP?

I've been sent a another new router, the third in total (my original, plus a replacement and now this). A dual channel Zyxel this time, so a bit of a nicer bit of kit than the usual poverty ones they give out as standard.

I'm still getting iffy speeds, even on LAN and directly in to the ONT so will get an engineer out again to retest the line. Definitely looks like trafficking/throttling to me.

Connection drops aren't an issue anymore and haven't been for a while now :)

Thanks.

I'm in a rented property on a new estate in Andover that is serviced by Seethelight. I'm on the 50mb package paid for by the landlord.

They definitely perform some kind of management of at least my connection. Simply running a speed test from speedtest.net and the one on their site can yield vastly different results, especially at peak times. Sometimes, Sunday evenings for example, I struggle to stream 1080p YouTube videos.

A dual band router would be nice, but sorting out the management of the connection is a greater priority.

If the connection stays up but speeds drop through the floor in a predictable and repeating pattern that coincides with what you'd consider to be peak usage periods (evenings, weekends) then there is no point looking at your equipment. It's a capacity problem and all you can do is wait and hope your provider gets their wallet out.

Well I moved house within the same estate. Obviously it is still served by Seethelight. The service they provide is really bad. Not only is 1080p streaming not possible, but even smooth gaming on a 60Hz Battlefield 4 server is problematic.

These should not be issues on a 50Mb connection!

Lack of competition sucks. Have you tried complaining?
