Fibre optic speeds dramatically reduced

Hello all.

I've had Fibre optic broadband for nearly 2 1/2 years now. First with Sky, when I was able to achieve the full 38Mb speed, then I swapped to BT with their 'Infinity 2' (up to) 76Mb package.

I never did really get anymore than 40Mb even when I went to Infinity 2, but I've noticed that recently my speeds have dropped to more like 10Mb!

Is there some sort of contention ratio issue with Fibre optic? i.e. the more people who have it, the lower the individual speed? I'm guessing more and more people have it since 2013 when it was a bit more of a novelty, and wondered if that could affect speeds?

Obviously I'll get in touch with BT as it's nowhere near what it should be, but I thought it best to check here to rule out anything obvious.

I've rebooted the Openreach modem (power lead out for 30 seconds) a few times and it hasn't helped. I've got an Asus RT-N66U so it shouldn't be a problem with the router.

You will see your sync rate drop due to crosstalk but for it to go from 40Mbs down to 10 would indicate a fault. What does the BT speed test show?

I would be on the phone to your ISP who can actually test the line rather than asking on an internet forum why it's running slowly. OK they'll likely be closed atm!

Well their support was useless.

They could see it was a lot slower than the guaranteed minimum, but blamed my 'third party router' (which never had a problem attaining full speed before)

Unless they've somehow rigged it so that it doesn't go full speed unless it detects a Homehub 5 now? They are sending me one of those, free of charge, but I don't really want it as my Asus N66U is pretty good.

Just use the HH5 for the purposes of proving it's not your (far superior) router at fault and they need to fix it. Then swap back once done.

A while back my fibre dropped from 40mb to around 16mb, was a line fault which got fixed and has been fine since.

Installed their Homehub 5, speeds are worse now.

They keep faffing with tests on the line but nothing is improving, clearly it's not an issue my end but they won't have it.

I'd keep at them and then if they keep saying there is no issue and go back to sky as their support is far better and they do seem to pass things onto openreach a lot quicker than Bangladesh Telecom do. What are your stats like? Anyway I do hope it gets sorted quickly.

This is why I hate they've made it so hard to get stats with the default modems for FTTC - line stats make it so easy to narrow down potential reasons for a fault and sometimes can directly indicate whether the problem is on the customer or BT's end :S

Wouldn't mind so much if BT's support was on the ball but 9/10 a random person on the internet knows more/can better help than they can.

I've been elevated to Level 2 now (which I presume means a non-indian call centre)

This Home Hub 5 is shocking crap though, the smart feature means you have to login each wifi device with the BT username/password.

I went out and my Girlfriend has been home all day and ended up using lots of her data allowence because the stupid smart setup was connecting her to the wifi but not actually logging her on.

Turned that crap off now, didn't have time earlier to properly look at it. I have to keep it connected for 48 hours now so they can get information from it
