I've got a 2000 1.25 Fiesta to teach my girlfriend to drive in.

When started from cold, and only intermittently, it doesn't seem to respond to the throttle pedal for several seconds, then as you apply more power it will rev up and go.

It's fine once warm and doesn't do it all the time.

My initial thought is the throttle potentiometer which I know is a problem on the Focus. I've not actually checked it has one yet!

Anything else I should check?

I have a 2001 model (Ghia, still a 1.25 though) and this happens as I'm leaving my estate; change into second, light throttle application, a second later it feels like I've let off the accelerator slightly, even though I haven't. If I add more throttle it does nothing for a couple of seconds until suddenly it 'kicks' back into life. Very odd feeling and a little annoying.

The throttle in this model of Fiesta is still a physical cable, not an electronic one. This is the second Mk5 Fiesta 1.25 I've had that has done it.

Seems more likely to happen if I change into second quite early, and the revs dip under what would be idle (around 1250rpm when cold, I could change into second and when the gear is engaged it drops to 1000rpm).

Its worth checking the throttle body and checking that the valve (flappy thing) moves and doesn't stick. I would also check the maf and idle control valve as they were also pretty common failings on the zetec engines.

Had very similar symptoms on my old Skoda Fabia. It never recurred after replacing temperature sender, thermostat and power steering angle sensor. Not sure which one actually fixed it.

Incidentally, the wife has a 2001 1.25 Fiesta and her car's never had these symptoms.
