Fiesta judders when setting off

For the past 8 months or so my Fiesta 1.25 has developed a problem where it will judder slighty when you set off, sometimes it is worse but other times it is not so bad. It also does it when changing from 1st / 2nd / 3rd etc but once I change to 4th it doesn't do it. The judder does not happen during normal acceleration but only when setting off or as mentioned changing from 1st / 2nd / 3rd. I have already changed the plugs, leads & coil pack but the problem still persists. I am pin-pointing the problem down to either the clutch (car has only done 64K and the clutch is not slipping though) or another part called the Fuel Pressure Regulator maybe? Could someone possibly help me out with this problem?

Thanks all - Liam

the clutch is on the way out id say. its not meeting the flywheel flat, but at a slight angle.

its new clutch time for sure.

Great :( Was hoping it is not the clutch but it would make sense as my gf's Fiesta had a new clutch just before she got the car in August & her car changes gear brilliantly and feels really smooth and no juddering at all. My car seems to really judder more when setting off on a hill or changing gears when driving up a hill. Can a car's clutch still be on its way out even if its not slipping then? Are there any other tests I can do to see if it could be the clutch? (I have forgotten the 3rd gear on the hill start test, could someone explain it to me?)

I thought that it could be the Fuel Pressure Regulator as well as my car seems to be using a lot more fuel than usual very recently?

Thanks all - Liam

Give all the sensors a clean?

Edit: I mean the ones involved in combustion, not the open door ones etc :D

I think I'm going to take it in to my local garage for them to have a proper look and see what they say. I've got to take it in anyway for them to see if they can look at the other suspension bushes on the car as its still banging in some places. (had the rear trailing arm bushes done on the MOT a month ago which improved the banging but some of it is still there)

Edit - could anyone on here in the Leicester area recommend me a good place that do clutches? I have rang around one place already and have been quoted around £320 inc parts, labour & VAT etc. Please don't mention Mr Clutch as I have heard that my local one is terrible.

Thanks again - Liam

Most quotes for a clutch are around £300 to £350 when I was enquiring. Did it myself for £60 (OEM clutch - wanted it there and then) and a few days of mechanical work and running around to fetch bigger/heavier duty parts than I had to hand  Would help if you had an engine lift - most garages can do it same day if they can get the clutch that day and they aren't rammed full (or so they claim).

I've just spoken to another mate of mine who owns a small garage/dealership and he said that he could get someone to get the parts & do it all for me for around £200-£250 so I'm going to speak to him towards the weekend.

Thanks all - Liam

Tried cleaning the MAF/ICV? Could be dropping to too low an idle speed when you put the clutch down..

Shop around more, I had a brand new clutch put in a 106 for £150 inc. parts, surely Ford parts aren't that much more expensive or difficult to fit?

I got told that besides the clutch that I would also need a new slave cylinder?? The slave cylinder and clutch I got quoted for was around £140 for both.

Did you change just the clutch of the cylinder as well?

Yes, just the clutch as the cylinder as working fine (previous owner had a new cylinder as the original had been leaking) - the clutch however had shattered and needed replacing flywheel managed to survive without so much as a scratch but the bell housing of the gearbox was nicely scratched up.

Parts or parts and labour?
If thats the second I would snap his hand off.

Does it do it every time you pull away or just at the start of a journey?

If its only at the start of the journey, I wouldn't say it is definitely a worn out clutch. My 1.25 Fiesta does this. Only happens when setting off & goes after a few gear changes or stop starts. My clutch is most definitelty not worn out & the cause for mine is most likely either condenstation or a few drops of oil on the actual clutch which evaporates when it gets hot when the flywheel & clutch meet.

If it happens to yours constantly then yes I would guess the clutch is on its way out.

Thanks for all of your replies all,

Took the car to my local garage this afternoon and he had a quick spin & had a look at the car and he confirmed that it is the clutch is definately on its way out. Had a voicemail left on my phone a couple of hours ago from the place nearby me who I spoke to this morning and he came back with a full quote of £298 inc. all parts & labour etc. Going to consider getting it done there if my mate can't get the parts from his other mate.

EZee84 - mine will do it 99% of the time when pulling off & changing gears from 1st / 2nd & 3rd etc. Pulling off on a cold start feels 10x worse. My GF had a spin in my car earlier and she said that the clutch work feels absolutely awful.

uv - the revs do not seem to drop at all when I press my foot down on the clutch.

Now I'm worried. My car has been doing this since getting a new clutch fitted a month or so ago. You reckon they've buggered it?
