Hi.

I have a 1996 Fiesta 1.1 and i cant get the steering lock off with the ignition key. Do you think it would be ok to break it? would the car still be drivable?.

I cant afford to get it towed to a garage and repaired and i can live without a steering lock as long as i wouldn't do any damage to the cars steering

No its Not Ok to break it as you run the risk of snagging the broken pieces at a later date whilst driving. Not good.
Dismantle the steering column properly and slide the piece of Ally out. It doesn't take long.
Before you do this try to use the key first wiggling it whilst rocking the wheel from side to side.

If he can't disengage the steering lock then he won't be able to get the engine running surely?

The steering lock wouldn't unlock on my sisters corsa so I just turned the engine on and it released itself.

I have never been in a car that allows me to start the engine with the steering lock still engaged.
