Hey,

Back in October I bought a 51 plate Fiesta 1.3 Flight for £2200. I have decided that since I have started doing a few motorway miles, I want something faster than 59 bhp and 16 seconds to 60. Also for 59bhp the fuel economy is pathetic.

SO, what you peeps recommend me changing to, the budget would be exactly the same as I can't afford even a small hike in budget, and has to be same insurance group, as this was the first car under my own name so I have 0 years NCB. I wasn't really sure what sort of car I can get for £2200 and what age, but preferrably as new with as low miles as possible! :)

Cheers

OMG I don't believe you said that! I've been driving a Xzara since I passed my test nearly 2 years ago, it was my mums, and after driving the fiesta I now hate them, bad gearbox, don't like the clutch and they aren't that reliable, cheers anyway though. Believe it or not, the Fiesta is actually happier cruising at 70-80mph than the Zxara, I got a lot of steering wheel vibration at 70mph on the Xzara.

I'm not a diesel fan myself, but they are growing on me. I only do 10k a year so will stay with petrols. but for motorway miles 306d or similar would do the trick. Not slow either. (do sound like a tractor mind). Test drive one.

Assuming you paid close to the correct value of the car i wouldn't hold up getting your money back on the car, you may have less than 2200 to spend.

a 306 shares EXACTLY the same chassis as a xsara. you will not get a 01/51 reg 306 for £2200 you will for a xsara. as for mondeo, well thats going to be higher insurance. And as for your mums vibration. Tell her to go to ats and get her wheels balenced :P
the 306 will also share the same steering/suspension/engine/gearbox/brakes as the xsara so if you really do genuinly hate your mothers xsara because she needs to get the wheels balenced and its causing steering vibration at speed (will happen on any car and will cost £5-£10 to fix) then i cannot reccomend a 306 at all :)

Then clearly there is something seriously wrong with the particular Xsara you have been driving. It should be easily better than a Fester on the Motorway.

Your requirements are impossible - you will not get anything decent, as new and 'low mileage' for your budget. You did DAMN well to get a 51 plate Fiesta for £2200.

Dunno about that, its a Flight 1.3, seen some on AT for £2200 sure those could be haggled down to 2k easy enough.

Car auction ;) Okay, so if I go for an older car, say around the 2 grand budget, I guess up to a 51 plate is pushing it a bit, I suppose if I find one in good condition it should be fine. The Xzara has always done that, my mum denies it, and its been through 2 MOT's and 2 services and not fixed yet, I'll tell her its cheap to sort though.

What about a Focus? I really like driving the Fiesta, like the Ford gearbox and clutch. :) A 1.4 Focus would be a bit better for cruising no?

You will not get anything good on a 51 plate for 2k unless its done crazy miles, your looking at a 1999 / 2000 plate something i guess.

So underpowered its untrue and besides can you get any focus for 2k?

I think you need to come back down to earth!

Okay fine bin the "new" part, I just don't want a banger! What can I get for a bit over 2k? According to Parkers, the Focus 1.6 is a whole insurance group less, but comes with 40 extra bhp pver my Fiesta. Something like that would be good if I can find an early one for 2k ish.

Edit - the focus is cheaper to tax aswell, I can't believe that little 1.3 Fiesta is the highest CO2 band! ridiculous. I strongly advise anyone against buying a car with that 1.3 engine!

Insurance groups dont mean that much.

A group 9 2.0 Mondeo Zetec costs the same to insure as my group 12/13 2.0 Ghia X.

I have had a cheaper quoute on an ST24 compared to a V6 Ghia X too, from the same insurance company! Crazy!

Insurance groups are indeed quite useless - I spent last night running quotes through with my insurer for my next car.

They actually want MORE to insure a 2002 525d than they do for a 2002 530d - a higher group car.

I also found the difference between a Group 15 520i and a MODIFIED Group 18 540i is just 20%.

Go by quotes, not groups.

And Tesla, the 2.0 Zetec is Group 11.
