The Descent

The original ending was too bleak for US test audiences, so they got a different one where the last woman escaped.

The Descent
You see, now I wish I hadn't read this thread, because now I remember watching it and now I'm going to have to stick my fingers in my ears, close my eyes and sing at the top of my voice until the memory's suppressed again. I am not good with horror. I should not have watched it... it was the movie equivalent of playing the original Doom when it was released. There came a point where I definitely wasn't enjoying myself, but I needed to escape and get closure. Still waiting for Descent closure!

There is a sequel...it's better to pretend it doesn't exist though, it's utterly awful.

:D

Tbh, I'm not much of a horror fan, but didn't find Descent too bad. That night vision bit was pretty marvellous too

Freak! :-) The thing about Descent is that, unlike most horror, it could be real... there's always a feeling that we haven't quite explored everything that's Down There.

In one of those weird coincidences, I've been playing through the Tomb Raider games given away free recently, and half an hour ago I reached a bit in Shadow of the Tomb Raider which feels like it was definitely created by someone who saw Descent! Think I might wait until it's daylight to finish that bit.

Anyway, to try to be slightly on topic... I thoroughly approve of an alternate end to Descent.

I think utterly terrible is a little harsh. Whilst not a patch on the original, it was ok. The original is one of my favourite horror films of recent ish years though. It really does convey a claustrophobic fear of the unknown. Underrated film.

I used to be quite forgiving of it but a few months ago I watched both movies back to back again as the first is an all time favourite.

The 2nd has just too many issues for me to be able to enjoy it anymore that I probably just put up with initially. The first movie was virtually pitch black when there were no light sources, the sequel always has ambient light that means you can pretty much see everything the whole time. Secondly, there is no real sense of claustrophobia, the darkness and lack of space in the first was oppressive and hard to bear, here it's barely an inconvenience.

Also the sheriff and his boneheaded inability to listen to anyone is just frustratingly poor character writing, the girls in the first felt quite fleshed out and individual (aside from the andrenaline junkie), everyone in the sequel barring Sarah is 2D and just there to be cannon fodder.

Maybe 'utterly awful' was an unfair comment but it's mostly below average.

I have to say, I have only seen it once, so my opinion may be revised if I saw it a second time. I certainly remember it wasn't nearly so dark and suspenseful and some of the characters had me rolling my eyes.

The first film is probably a 7.5/10 where the sequel is a 5.5/10 or something.

If you have time, i'd genuinely be interested in your thoughts on a rewatch.
