LONDON, March 15 (Reuters) - MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi has challenged Formula One champion Fernando Alonso to a high-speed duel to see who is quickest.
The 24-year-old Renault driver said last month he was unimpressed by Rossi's Formula One tests for Ferrari and felt it would be very hard for him to switch from two wheels to four.
"He might finish fifth or even get on the podium some time but I could do the same on the bikes if I was given enough time to practise," the Spaniard told a news conference.
The words appeared to have stung Rossi, who was quoted by British weekly Motorcycle News on Wednesday as saying he wanted to put Alonso to the test.
"I read that if Alonso is able to make some practice then he can put a MotoGP bike on the podium with me," said the 27-year-old Italian.
"Well, I think we should drive a Formula One car, a World Rally car and a MotoGP bike, add the times together and then we will see who is the fastest."
Rossi, winner in motorcycling's top category for the past five years, has tested repeatedly for Ferrari including a session in February with other drivers.
The charismatic Italian has also competed in rallies and Ferrari's seven times world champion Michael Schumacher has said Italy's highest-paid sportsman has the talent to make the switch to Formula One.
Alonso won Formula One's season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix at the weekend.

Would make for a cracking TV program.

That would be awesome to watch! Huge kudos though to anybody that can put in even half decent laptimes in three very different motorsports.

unfortunately the chances of alonso getting even close to rossi on two wheels is remote I suspect. Even the rest of the MotoGP riders struggle to stay with him.

What are those bikes, 200+ BHp and about 100Kg ?

240+bhp and i think they are 145kg. My NC30 weighs 165Kg and has 55bhp.

Schumaker tried the Desmosedcie(sp) round misano and put a decent time in, though it was no where near Rossi's time.

sorry, but rossi will spank him imo :) it'll be close on the rally, alonzo will win by a second or two on the F1, but rossi will absolutely school him on the bikes :p

Tom.

rossi would demolish by so much on the bikes, that the small gains alonso would make on f1 and maybe wrc would pale in comparison, although rossi has done rallying before so might even beat him on that! although this would never go ahead for risk of injury to alonso!

Rossi beat McCrae didn't he in WRC?

When was this and what was wrong with McCrae? Was he driving a horse and cart compared to rossi's WRC rally car?

rossi would win ralley hands down, school him by a massive margin on the bikes and loose by about a second in the F1.
Alonso = good F1 driver
Rossi = God on wheels (dosent matter how many)

And yes he did beat mcrae, cant remember the cars but I think you underestimating how taleted this lad is! his is on annother planet to anyone else on a bike, and with very little practise wasnt he 0.6 secs off schumies F1 time in the last test.
Please, dont try and tell me alonso is better than schumacher, no way. Id say it was close now, lets see if he gets his apptite back this year.

The BBC should set this up, viewing figures would be interesting!

I agree with the comments above... I think Rossi would actually spank him on the rally too... as big kahunas are needed.... which Rossi definately has!

I bet Alonso can't even ride a bike. :p

Rossi actually has permission to race with a specially-crafted sidecar just for his balls.

The man has talent in shovelfuls, a healthy lack of fear and, above all, a personality...Unlike Alonso, Schumacher, McRae et al...

Bah. that explains it, it was an asphalt rally they should do a dirt rally, that will make it a proper rally :o
You need much bigger balls to fly around on small dirt roads then on an asphalt road imo

I'll give you that you do need a lot of skill and big sensitive things to do that, but seriously 240bhp+ on 2 wheels, with little protection and the speeds and manoeuvers they do in my opinion easily matches the required skills and deathwish tendancies.
