Fighting a dog

Well, after a dog has savagely attacked a human, I think its only fair that it be put down, but I can see it from the owners' point of view, too, as they were not looking after the dog at the time of the attack.

I agree, but then again - why have a dog so savage? They had it from a puppy and hand reared it to be like that. Despite the fact that they don't have a large property to protect...I mean, the dog was savage towards the owners too, they couldn't control it. It was just a matter of time before it attacked someone and (unfortunatley) it was my uncle. They argued that an Alsation is savage by nature, but we've owned a few and with the right upbringing they can be very loyal and friendly dogs (we own a farm as well, alsations make good work dogs). Arguments that the breed of the dog creates its "personality" are totally wrong - its the upbringing of the animal...same as kids!

/runs in terror!

I would probably climb a tree, scramble up a wall, jump over a fence, climb in to someones car, run in to a shop and assess the situation from there. Basically anything to avoid confrontation (hypothetically, if I knew the dog was going for me). Although if non of these options exist, i'd be forced to kill the poor thing. With fire. In the ovaries.

I always find that Golden Retrievers and Labradors are a bit fat/tubby. Is it just skin perhaps? They look cute though.

killsta's dog doesnt look fat, though I feel that might be due to its young age. As it gets older, it might begin to look a little frumpy.

The cutest puppies I have ever seen have to be those of a Rottweiler. The problem is that as they grow up, they turn into something very ugly and nasty.

They do get fat easily if not walked properly - we've had 5 Retrievers in total and none of them have ever looked fat, but they are walked about 2 or 3 miles a day.

killsta is right, you've got to keep them active but if you do they won't look fat, they are also quite intelligent generally so need mentally stimulated as well.

Dharok, when you say loyal, just how loyal are we talking here? Are we talking 'loyal' as in, "if you were attacked by 8 dogs while walking him, he would make a run for it and leave you right in it" (as in the woman who was mauled to death, while her dog was making a run for it)?

:D

Hmm maybe, I would have thought if 8 other dogs attempted to go for his ball when on a walk then they might have another thing coming, as this dog would fight till death to look after his ball. So I do believe that if I or another family member of mine was attacked by another bunch of dogs, he wouldn't just run away. But then again, what do I know it's never happend.

His ball would be a different story, as when he is on his walk he treats it as "working" as a normal collie would do on a farm. And when he's on a walk he is completely focused on his ball. Even if you was to put half a pound of beef infront of him to eat, he wouldn't! Where as at home, in a relaxed environment he'd be itching to get at it!
