Anyone got a nice little freeware tool that'll do this and which you recommend? I'm on Win8 and I'm not convinced it's searching through the contents of ALL files, tested it a couple of times and it's failed miserably. Doesn't seem to matter what options I'm picking, I just can't seem to rely on it. it's not exactly system files - backups of a minecraft server, so plain text!

it might appear not to respond if you set it to work on a huge folder so just leave it to do it's thing and it will be ok. you can filter out file types and such. look for find in files... under the Search menu.
