File Copy errors during XP installation

Hi,

Have been trying to install XP Home on a Fujitsu PC for a friend using the original discs that came with it. The discs are clean and undamaged. During installation it lets me get past the format disk stage and when it starts to copy windows files across to the hard drive it always comes up with a filecopy error i.e. fileXXX has not copied etc.

Now I have had a look at the Microsoft KB article relating to this that states this error is likely to be related to the memory and am stumped.

So far I have tried different known good memory (same errors)
Brand new hard drive as well as one from my other system that I know is fine (same errors)
Different DVD drive as well as brand new drive(same errors)
Different IDE cables (the drives are all IDE not SATA) same errors
Swapping around from having the hard drive on the primary and secondary IDE channel (same errors)
Tried different install media (same errors)
The cpu is a Sempron and temperatures are fine etc.

The motherboard is a Socket A Asus A7N8X-VM Micro ATX board. I am thinking the problem must be motherboard related so have ordered a new ASROCK K7S41GX (it was pretty cheap).

Do you think I am right in my conclusion, anyone who has had similar problems in the past I would be interested in your outcomes.

Thanks.

well you seem to have tried everything else. only things left are the motherbaord and maybe the disc is damaged or faulty if thats pssible. the mobo is *** cheapest to try first :)

Has to be motherboard. Try running 1 stick of ram on the board and make sure volts and timings are right. I just had a very similar problem and it turned out to be not enough volts to memory

Have already tried one stick of ram and still getting the same problems. will see how the new motherboard turns out on tuesday when I get it. thanks for the replies.

i get that sometimes, and it usually fixes itself when i unplug the computer for a while

i dont know if you have been unplugging it while messing about inside or not, if not, try it :)

make a back up of the disk if you can then use that. its if its not the dvd room drive then its got to be CD.

try and let us know
