I hope someone can help me please as I am fast running out of ideas. My current setup is as below:

Asus M4A785TD-M-Evo.
AMD Athlon X2 245.
6 GB DDR3 RAM.
Realtek RTL8112 NIC.
Etec PT-3810 router.

My PC stays connected to my ISP no problem. I can surf all day if necessary without any drop in connection. I can watch youtube videos, upload photos to photobucket etc. My issue is when it comes to downloading files greater than a few MB.

I have tried to download the following files:

VMware player.
Virtualbox.
ATI video driver.
Server 2008 R2 image.

The above are just some of the files but regardless of the file the download stops at random percentages and I must cancel out of the download. The only file I managed to download (after many many attempts) was the server image as the MSDN site gives you a download manager. The other files I have yet to successfully download.

What I have noticed and this may have no bearing on the issue is that the transfer rates is always around 700kb/s when the download halts. I have tried Win XP x86/x64 and also Win 7 x86/x64, updated my NIC driver and also turned off IPV6 in Win 7 to no avail. I have also reset the router to factory defaults. The router only has one LAN port. The motherboard was only bought in Jan 2010 but the router is 4 years old.

The only items left to rule out are the router, NIC and cable. What puzzles me is I only have issues with downloading (don't upload large files so never tried). Can anyone please help me? Am I missing something on the software front? Any ideas welcome. By the way I don't have a spare router, cable or NIC to test.

Which isp?maybe they are capping over a certain speed and causeing the download to fail?Maybe try a download manager to check this out? :)

my ISP is newnet - never had any issues with them before. I don't think its a capping issue because when I was using the MSDN download manager I could barely download a few MB and the download would stop. I would then have to either click suspend then resume or have to restart the download manager again and resume the suspended download. Using the download manager I noticed that the download would halt at varying speeds.

Etec PT-3810 router
Never heard of that make before, are there any firmware updates available?
Have you got the option of borrowing another router to try?
Failing that you might look for a cheap router and/or nic from the M.M. or fleabay,if that does not fix it you could then sell it on

Yeah it was a cheapo router I bought years ago. Checked the Etec site and my router already has the latest firmware. I will try and borrow or buy a decent router and LAN cable. Do you think the NIC could be at fault? Its just strange that I have no issues during normal browsing but when trying to download anything above 3MB causes an issue.

My guess ,and it is just a guess,is that the router is at fault
I tend to stick with known makes for pc gear netgear, linksys etc
My current favorites are netgear dg834gt and the 2wire 2700hv-g
