File Needed

I have a problem installing windows onto my new computer (but old hard drive)
i am getting this error,

The File 'asms' on windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, then click OK.

if i click cancel it will just say it cannot continue and restart to this same point again

dosnt seem to be working, i cannot get regedit.exe to work, it says The System Cannot Execute the Specified Program

Are you installing XP Home as an upgrade from another OS?

Otherwise when i installed afresh I got a couple of errors at work trying to install XP Pro onto an old HD, said on a couple of occasions that it couldnt copy a particular file (d3d9.dll or something like that). Presumed it was a problem with the disk so it couldnt read it, however used the same XP disk on a brand new hard drive and it installed without a problem.

I had this exact same problem on my laptop this weekend, was using a an msdnaa copy of windows xp that I got from my uni as an iso so had to burn to disk. So I thought it was the disk so burnt another copy but still had the same problem. Then I cleaned my dvd writer on my laptop with a cleaner and then tried again with the original disk and worked fine.

ive tried about 3 different HD's and all the same problem, do you think it could be a mobo issue?
