I just found some old excel documents I'd been working on a few years ago that don't open. I get this message:

'untitled.xlsx' cannot be opened because it was last saved using a Beta version of Excel that is no longer supported. To open the file, first use a supported version of Excel to save the file, and then try again.

Now I'm pretty sure it's refering to the Office 2007 Beta I was using for a bit since that's the only beta I recall using. I'm not terribly fussed about these old documents, but is this likely to happen to files created in the 2010 Beta once I start using the release version?

The XML format for Office 2007 was one of the new features. Perhaps the reason why the full version can't open them is due to a change in the format between BETA and release.

I opened a Word document created in Word 2010 with Word 2007 just fine yesterday.

I probably should have tested OpenOffice etc. but I really didn't care enough about the files.

2010 file compatability with 2007 sounds promising anyway. Again, it's nothing important else I wouldn't be using the beta.

I honestly can't see Microsoft breaking the file formats for 2010. You can never guarantee what version of Office someone will be using when you send them a document [or you receive a document]. Having two different versions of docx, xlsx etc would be a royal pain in the buttock region.
