File recovery programs

Does anyone know of a free program that allows me to possibly retrieve files that were on the drive, yet has since been formatted and had Windows7 installed on it?

You could try something like TestDisk, but if you've formatted and reinstalled Windows over the top I wouldn't hold my breath.
