Hey

I've got an old computer that I want to use to provide network storage to all other computers in the house.

Am I best to use XP Pro and setup shares with users/groups? Or do I use Windows Server 2003?

I've tried FreeNAS, but the speed was lacking and it was a bit of a pain. I'd also like to use the old computer from time to time for other uses (downloading/streaming/etc). Plus, I just prefer Windows and since every other computer that'll access it is Windows, I guess it makes more sense. That and the old computer has a valid XP Pro CoA to use.

I guess the title of this thread should really read NAS operating system, but there you go.

I have got a similar set up at home and i went for the XP option. We set up a server solution for work but we needed a domain controller hence the need for server.

I think server might be a bit overkill for what you want to do.

Yeah.

I've set it up today with XP Pro and it's working fine. Can access the shares fine from my netbook over the wireless, and use RDC to admin the machine if necassary.

I assume that it'll work headless too? Or will XP throw a hissy fit without a monitor/mouse/keyboard plugged in?
