hi
i have been offered a pc with following spec for £25 . he doesnt know anything more about but it works. will it be suitable for a cheap file server or internet browsing. just want to confirm with some who knows more. also i take it the athlon runs at 1.4ghz
Athlon 1400, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, 256MB NVidia GFX

It does seem like a good price, as gumbald says the individual parts are worth more than that. The 1400 does indeed run at 1.4ghz although pure ghz is a pretty poor measure of the relative speed of a CPU, this was before they started to introduce the 'PR' ratings. :)

I have a 550 P3 with 512MB running Freenas, and I also have a 1.2 P3 DELL laptop with 512MB as a browsing PC and it works good too.

That will easily be a file server or a internet PC

Should be great mate.
I have a palomino 1700 with 512mb ram (had 1.5gig but wasn't really needed) and a 10gig boot drive running xp pro. Its fantastic as a file server and download box.

Just bear in mind that the original Athlons don't support SSE and are also extremely toasty, so be sure to get some good fans and clean out the case regularly. Othwerise, looks like a steal at that price.

got it in the morning. turned out to be a bargain as it came with a dvd rom, external soundcard. one thing missing which was the harddrive but the person is sorting that out now. am i right in thinking i could use windows home server to stream files
