Riteo,

Wanting to build myself a home file server. I'm after circa 3-4TB of space, and ideally want to do this with some sort of data safety (RAID 5 maybe?)

Big problem im finding is a motherboard or controller card with enough SATA ports, as it seems this can be done best with 500 gig drives.

What do people here recommend, I'd appreciate full specs off you all if possible (case, psu etc) and ideally sooner rather than later as I want to order in the next couple of days.

Cheers all

Dell Perc 5/i full 8 port hardwhare raid 5 controller, can pick it up for £100 at auction. fussy about motherboards.

if not a P35 should do you, use TB drives, they are getting cheep these days.

RAID 5 is probably a bit overkill for what you need. It's really high end storage you see those kinds of RAID levels.

You'd probably be better off with a RAID 1 set-up, which mirrors the data to a second disk. If one fails you have a backup copy.

Do you have a budget here? Also there is the obvious point that you are going to need a pretty big case as well to accomodate 8 odd hard drives. It might be worth biting the bullet and going for four 1tb drives instead, you can pick up controller cards more easily and cheaply for four drives than for six+.

sorry, was a bit retarded and forgot to add that !

Ideally I'd like to stay sub 1k, but not sure if that is doable?

Dell Perc 5/i = £100 ish

add case

so your backbone will cost you about £300

EIDT: if you want ditch the raid card, get a ATX P35 bord, cheaper but not as expandable

I'm not too sure about this but perhaps it might give you a base, I've tried to do a bit of research and the motherboard has 8 SATA ports although you could only use 6 together as 2 are on a different controller (Source). It does support Raid5 but I'm not convinced it will be worth it on a home system without an add-in card, there is a performance hit I believe, although if it is just a file server then it probably doesn't matter hugely. The case and PSU are overkill for the moment but they do offer the potential to add more hard drives easily, maybe the HX520w would be more suitable though. I don't know that it would be any better of an option than crazyDAJT's idea but it is perhaps easier to source.
