file shareing between two computers

HI,
I Have two computers at home with two computers, however when I try to access a folder on one from another using file share, the folder stops responding.
Is ftp a better way?
Any guides on how I should set this up?
Do I need one to be the server?

FTP is not a good way to share files between two home computers.

If it stops responding you probably have something configured incorrectly. You don't need a server either. Your set up will depend on what operating systems you are using but finding some tutorials on Google shouldn't be a problem.
