morning peeps. figured there must be someone on here with the knowledge to assist...
i've just constructed myself a file server that runs xp sp3 and a main machine running vista business and i'm trying to set up a connection between the two. i had tried it over my existing wifi, but the signal's too sporadic to be useful, so i figured the next best thing is an ethernet cable. i had originally installed a cutdown xp on both and it worked fine, but the cutdown versions weren't liking exchange server and the copy of xp i was using wasn't technically legit, so out came the official xp sp3 and vista business sp1.
from a fresh install of both, i've set them up to have ip's of 192.168.9.1 and 192.168.9.10, subnet masks of 255.255.255.0 and no dns... in the xp machine i've turned simple file sharing off in the folder options menu and shared the two terrabyte drives as shared folders called "files" and "moreFiles" (aptly)... in the vista machine i've set the computer as being discoverable, file sharing, and media sharing are both on... oh yeah... and the cable is ACTUALLY plugged in... they're both using on-board gigabit network ports... specs are as follows....
Fileserver
athlon x2 4400
2gb ram
2x1tb hdd
gigabyte 7 series mobo
main machine
intel q9550
4gb ram
evga nforce 790i mobo
2x260gtx evga
500gb hdd
i wouldn't mind just getting these to work so that i can leave all the files on the fileserver without having to copy them over to use them (as things were before i updated the os) and then for them to be able to use their own wifi connections (as the fileserver will be bittorrenting and the main machine will be gaming/downloading/surfing/porn)...
thanks in advance.
