file sharing help

I'm currently trying to share my media with other computers on the network. I'm running Windows 8.1 and the other computers are win 7 and vista. I've managed to get streaming working so they can see and steam from inside media player but would like to be able to just browse the files and copy them to the other computers of they want. For some reason when browsing the files is just saying permission denied. If anyone can help I would be very grateful

Network discovery is on. I've tried setting up a homegroup but the win7 laptop won't connect to it for some reason and homegroups don't exist on vista as far as I know

The other computers aren't asking for credentials at all, just saying they don't have permission. I'm using an admin account to try to set the sharing up and I've gone into the sharing tab and tried playing around with the settings on my videos library but even with everyone having read/write permissions it doesn't seem to work. As streaming works I'm assuming it's just a tick box/setting somewhere but can't seem to find anything.

I'll have a look at MMC.exe too
