due to receive my mac mini next week and i was wondering is it possible to access the files on the mac mini from a vista pc and if so will i get the full speed of the network ports?

going to be using it as a seed box but am i right in thinking that i cant write to an NTFS volume?

any info would be helpful.

thanks

Right, it's been a while so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You can share Files between Windows and Mac no problem, as they both use the SMB protocol for file transfers. I also don't see any reason why you wont get full speed over ethernet. Not sure if the Mac mini is Gigabit or just Fast Ethernet but even 100 should be fast enough for whatever you're doing.

As far as NTFS goes, I think in Tiger you could read but not write. I don't know if this has changed, but I think there are some third party apps that enable full read/write. But, as above, if you're just sharing over a network the disk filesystem doesn't come into play.

Hope that answers your question.

I've done exactly what the OP is querying (sharing from Vista laptop to Mac).

Just make sure you turn on all the sharing options you require in the System Preferences on OS X. This includes setting up any workgroup names, and adding user restrictions (if you want to limit the receiving user to read-only etc)

You are correct about Tiger only being able to read, but not write to NTFS. Unfortunately, this has not changed for Leopard however you can get apps that enable this.

well so long as i can access the files on the mac from a vista machine it should do fine for my needs.

thanks for the replies.
