Hey guys,

I have set up a wireless network at home and I am wondering what I need to do to file share over the network, from my upstairs PC to the Laptop in the lounge. I tried setting up the C drive on the PC to be accessable to anyone, but I couldn't see it on the laptop so I guess I am doing something fundamentally wrong.

A step by step guide would be appreciated if possible, as I've got no idea what needs to be done to set it up.

Thanks a lot.

If youre using windows XP then just run the network setup wizard on both machines, found in Control Panel. Just make sure both machines are in the same Workgroup.

If this is done and its still not working, check your firewalls settings, you may need to enable file/printer sharing.

Ah right ok great, yeah it's XP.

Will I have to have both of the machines on when I run the wizards, and also will you assign a workgroup during the wizard and you just have to make sure you name them the same?

Thanks.

Ok a few problems, nothing is simple hehe.

I have a Wireless setup at home so if I wanted to allow file sharing I guess I'd run the "Wireless Networking Wizard" so I had a go and used my USB stick, not sure why but it told me to plug it in to the machine downstairs so I, although it also told me to plug it in to the router, but there is no USB port on my router which is confusing.

After that it said it was complete, but there was an error with the PC and said I should reference the Microsoft knowledgebase (turns out it has a problem using windows XP to connect to the router).

I'm a little confused as to if I'm supposed to go in to the properties on my C drive on both the PC and lappy and share them, then each should be able to see one another...or is it a little more complex than that?

Thanks.

Did you have any luck with your query??

I'm trying the same thing and it's completly screwed up my desktop.

I couldn't connect to the net on the desktop (no gateway) but could connect to the net on the laptop.

I was under the impression that XP was good for setting up a network

Anu help. advice or a link to an idiots guide would be great

Thanks

C

the best way i think is to do the following:

1. Go to control panel
2. Network Setup Wizard and follow the on screen instructions
3. ensure that you name the network WORKGROUP on all pc's. This can be anything you like as long as its the same on all pc's.
4. Create a folder on each pc named PC 1 Shares, PC 2 Shares, PC 3 shares, these can be named anything you like.
5. Right click each file and share them by doing what i said above ensuring you tick both box's to enable users to edit and access files.
6. Once you have done this open up My Computer
7. Go to tools and Map Network Drive
8. Expand My network Places
9. Expand Entire Network
10. Expand Microsoft Windows Network
11. Expand WORKGROUP or whatever you have called it
12. You should see all your pcs in here
13. Expand each individual one
14. If your on PC 1 select PC 2's shared folder that you created earlier.
15. Click ok and then finish.

You will now see a new drive in My computer this is a shared folder on your other pcs this lets you use and tansfer files between pcs.

You need to do this on all pcs.

this worked for me
