Hello all, I am trying to put together a file / web server for a pretty low budget (preferably 200 or less).

I will be running ubuntu server edition, and it needs to perform the following tasks:

Bind, Apache, PHP, SQL, Usenet (SABNZB), UPnP Streaming (360 / PS3), Samba sharing, Occasional Game Servers.

I've been having some trouble locating a suitable motherboard, it needs to have gigabit ethernet, raid support (I will be mirroring for backup), dual channel DDR2 memory, and be Socket 775. It seems that all the motherboards in my budget (sub £40 for the mb really) will have say Gigabit ethernet and raid but then be single channel or vice versa.

Anyway, this is what I have been looking at so far:

MSI P6NGM-FD GeForce 7100 Socket 775 Onboard VGA 8 channel mATX Motherboard

Intel Celeron Dual Core E1200 Socket 775 (1.60GHz) 800FSB 512KB L2 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC with LIFETIME WARRANTY

Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB Hard Drive SATAII *32MB Cache* - OEM

Antec NSK 3480 MATX Micro Tower - With 380W EarthWatts PSU ATX12V 2.2 USB/FireWire/Audio

Comes to around £220 right now, so if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated, I plan to add a second 1TB HD raid mirrored when I have some extra funds. I don't need a DVD drive, Floppy, or any accessories really, just the basics above. I most interested to hear your opinions on the processor, motherboard (that MB only supports single channel memory), and Case/PSU.

Many thanks all!

firstly do not think of RAID as backup, this should be done with external hdds because if you get a surge, the chances are with RAID both your HDDs could go.

second get the E1400 for £3 more, you get 2ghz from it and its worth the price even if you dont often need the power its nice to know its there.

Thanks for the processor tip, great stuff.

As for RAID backup, I was mainly after the convenience it provides in being effortless on my part.

How would you suggest I go about achieving that same level of automated backup with an external drive? (This is something for a little later on as I mentioned, funds prohibit me at the moment).

Appreciate any input!

Look for software that runs periodically that will synchronise folders. SyncToy is what I use on Windows, guessing there will be a Linux equivalent.

I would be surprised is Ubuntu server didn't have some form of backup utility already installed.

How about a PCI NIC?

I got a Maxtor external drive ages ago and it was bundled with Retrospect software which allowed you to set up automatic backups etc if thats any help?
