Files for my taskbar volume control have disappeared!

Hello,

I'm refurbishing my sisters old desktop pc and running into some real problems getting the onboard sound running.

- Firstly, I noticed there was no volume control in the task bar - when I tried to enable it I was told:

'Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.'

However I do not have any windows CDs in the house (they're at uni), so cannot complete any of the install functions.

- Secondly, there was no sound from the speakers. After hours of hunting online I finally found a system file for the soundcard which worked (when I pointed System Devices towards it).

- However there was still no way to control the sound volume without entering control panel - and since a system restart, the sound has disappeared AGAIN. If I try and access sound volume in the control panel I am told:

'Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install.'

So the two issues are:

- Can I get the files for my sound control? Aside from functionality it seems they are perhaps linked to my problem.

- Can I get a driver for my soundcard that works?

I've tried a download from download.com that is around 17 meg that has failed and corrupted twice, so any help you have with a solution would be really appreciated!

This is the hardware that should be relevant.

Mainboard : Asus CUW-AM/MEW-AM
Chipset : Intel i810
Device Audio : 82801AA 8xx Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller

Thanks, Alex
