Files no longer being overwritten

So this is on my work PC, over the last few days if I copy and paste files into a directory that already has a version of those files in, it no longer asks if I want to overwrite said files, its just creating a (2)copy version of those files. Similarly, if I save attachments from emails into a directory where a version of those files already exist, it is no longer overwriting, just simply making a copy.
This is a problem as my work involves needing to know that I am always using the most up to date files, hence overwriting is always the best solution.
I logged into my laptop to test and this has started doing the exact same thing. I am not an windows expert so I'm clueless on how to resolve it, Google isnt throwing up any solutions for me. Has something happened to my actual windows account to cause this?
Any suggestions appreciated!

Are you trying to save locally to your PC or a network share on a server?
Sorry, should have said, saving locally. Files arent saved to a network, thats why it seems really strange that its suddenly happened on both my desktop PC and my laptop.
