I was wondering how many people use this service and if so is it a resource hog whilst it converts in the background?

Edit: just realised i should have posted this in the software forum..feel free to move mods ;)

I use it on my MBP which is more likely to get nicked.

Thanks for the reply but could you tell me if you can notice a slowdown whilst it's doing what it does in the background?

The reason i ask is i produce music on my uMBP 15" and i could do with out any slowdowns in performance due to heavy use of software plugins running in Ableton Live 8 Suite.

Regards.

If disk IO is king then you really don't want to be running encryption. However, it's hard to say how much of a problem it will cause for you. Encryption software I use on other platforms has around a 5% hit with a modern processor so I can only assume FileVault is in the same sort of range. You wouldn't perceive a 5% drop in performance.

You'll just have to try and see how it goes. If it's going to be a problem it should be obvious from the start. Your computer won't grind to a halt because of the load on the CPU (there isn't any really). I'd say whatever app you were using would be more likely to freeze or crash altogether.
