I would just like a confirmation or any tips on setting something the previous company had as others are wanting around £200 to set this up and I more or less know how to do it anyway. We have a domain that is allowed to make a lot of FTP accounts on it so that assessors can upload their files to it so I want this being done.

Setup the main administration account with a password, make all the admin directories which no one but the admin can access, then have a directory for assessors, I assume that the assessor directory would require no password however, each assessor would have a folder within this that when I issue them their FTP information it goes directory to that folder and only their user/pass would allow them to enter it.

Is this a good way to set this up, or would putting a password on the default assessor directory and allowing them access to eachothers files as we have done previously be another way to do it again, any further tips to ensure that this stays secure or setting up would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

What you have there is correct. However rather have a password on the default directory, Leaving it open is asking for trouble.

I would have all users point to your main folder using their user name and password. Then, from there each user gets their own folder and only they have access to the folder. This is assuming of course you want each user to have their own folder.

I have done this setup a few times as above - you shouldn't have any issues. :)

So if I put the admins password on the assessor directory then have their folder with their name inside and have their own FTP linking only access to their folder, this would be fine and not an issue as I have the admin password on the assessor directory?

Thanks for confirming by the way :)

No sorry, I have mistyped what I was trying to say. Users folders must be outside of the public assessor folder.

So:
Admin -> has his own folder
-> Public assessor folder

And rest of the users setup in the same way.

Cool - let me know if you have any issues. ;)

Ok so would this work...

lala/lala/lala << default directory the provider allows to put into html_docs or whatever

html_docs > admin password (if you can password this directory)
admin (same as admin pass)
admin1 (same as admin pass)
admin2 (same as admin pass)
admin3 (same as admin pass)
admin4 (same as admin pass)
Assessors > password to secure this (same as admin?)
- name 1
- name 2
- name 3

Each of those with a name for each assessor has their own password which when they connect to the FTP will allow them to go there and to no one elses. I assume each password on each assessor is dependant on how many FTP accounts the provider allows also and also I would assign their data allowance when doing this?

I have figured what I want and that is correct as I have listed it. I need a host though with reasonable prices and decent hard drive space/bandwidth. The files are less than 1MB each so space may not be an issue until we move over to using audio statements rather than printed/written.

A host which allows multiple FTP accounts and decent space/reliability, I believe we are going to get a fresh domain and website also so that into account if you can recommend anything.

This is EXTREMELY easy to do with cPanel, I've done it myself a couple times. Most web hosts these days use cPanel, TSOhost definitely does.

I know how to use cPanel which is a good idea thank you, just need a reliable host. TSOhost how would you rate from 1-10? 10 being amazing

I've decided to go with tsohost and their clustered package for £200 a year with ID Protection, thanks for your replies you two.
