Not sure if the retail i3 comes with heatsink so have added one anyway.
Also not sure if the heatsinks come with TIM applied or if you need to buy some.

Why have you added windown to the AMD bundle but not the intel?
and you have chosen a case then needs any external drive when there is many that wull use a cheaper internal

What Phenom II chip is she using?

They're still very capable for your needs, an SSD would be the best choice here as it brings life to any computer old or new, a whole new build without an SSD seems a waste of money.

Agreed, any of the higher end Phenom II's will still be fine for average desktop use.

I suspect a lot of the problem is the lack of OS housekeeping and general gunk that has built up.

An SSD and a decent monitor would be wise use of the money.

EDIT: And make sure its not running on like 1GB of RAM or something silly also.

Some folks prefer to hide the optical drive away when not in use.
I forgot to add windows...whoops - fixed now though.

As I said, they're just some ideas !

it just look like you was trying to hide the price gap like ppl do with intel and amd.

a build like this need to be amd as it will have all the HP needed and should be around £100 cheaper

I was also thinking Amd maybe AM1 Maybe somethink like this

Motherboard Asrock AM1H-ITX
Cpu AMD Athlon 5350 APU
Case Antec ISK 600 Small Form Factor ITX Chassis Or Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini ITX Case - Black
Psu 120watt Brick
SSD Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter
Memory Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX)
Monitor Not sure

What you think chaps

the athlons dont have on-board GFX.... i know it stupid a socket made for ondoard GFX with a none GFX CPU.... you would need a GFX card.
i would look at AM2, also a faster ram really makes a difference with APU's
for your need there is a very cheap B-grade APU that i would snap up at only £20.
its only dual core but for your needs its fine

this ITX board would also work with the APU and ram

Also a quad core cpu if you need more grunt
