Plugged in a Tt fan with the 4 pin power connectors + the extension allowing you to still have the same number of connectors.

Somehow the extension shorted out against the case.
A loud bang a moment of silence with my trousers heavier than before, I thought I'd blown my brand new pc

Luckily everything seems to be in working order (possibly due to a surge protector extension cable I have), took the fan out to stop that from happening again.

I don't ever want to experience that again :|

More than likely your PSU cut the power, most modern psu's will cut power almost instantaneously when something shorts. Fortunately it was a quick short on the case, if it had shorted out on your motherboard it wouldn’t have turned back on again thats for sure.

I've heard that bang/pop once before and it was closely followed by my cursing coming from my dad!

Expected the worse, but I guess the corsair PSU is doing it's job :p

I was testing the PSU today and like a total dufus forgot to connect the CPU fan (the 3 pin was plugged it but it gets power from the 4 pin). It's a good thing my mobo shut down before it totaly burned it.

Whilst fiddling with this fan I also managed to get the 3 pin cable jammed in the cpu fan. Because I have a zalman heatsink with all the fins it took forever to untangle!

I think we need to start a club for those of us who's intense stupidity and/or ill luck has (or should have) caused extremely expensive and inconvenient destruction.

Something like the South Shingles Yacht Club, named after a famous sandbank, it's open only to people who've tragically embarassed themselves in command of a vessel.

Done this before, a fan pin touched my case and there was a spark and a bang.

I **** myself and my pc turned off, while i was thinking "OMG" 10 seconds later my pc came back on automatically and booted fine :p

I did that when I shorted a M/F molex connection (who designed them wants shooting when the Revolution comes) Thought I'd killed 400 notes worth of PC.
I nearly soiled myself when it happened & was relieved when I plugged in another PSU & it sprang to life.

Haha I did the same when I built my first PC.. I plugged everything in fine, turned it on.. and BANG.. smoke poured from the mobo..

And I tell ya.. when youve spent 1.2k on a new build that's not the sort of thing you want to happen!

Luckily the mobo was faulty :p I RMA'd it and got a brand new one :D ty OCUK

you were lucky man. i havn't had any problems with any of my builds ever.....one day it's going to happen, and it'll be bad like
