Filled up HDD

Im 6gig away from filling up my 80gig harddrive. My mouse pointer constantally has the little disk icon flashing up on it, anyone know what that means?

Um... yes, and when i took all the disks out it stopped. Its never happened before!

Any idea why it happened?

Sounds like it was trying to spin up but hasn't achieved it so it keeps trying.
