Hello,
I am currently developing a Film Database Online System which allows my mum to manage all the films she has recorded from the tv and burnt onto dvd and put into dvd boxes and stored with numbers. It also allows family members to view films we ahve by actor and director and whatever else I can think of. It's in early stages so far but getting there.

Someone suggested a few days ago that I should buy a large external hard drive with an ethernet port and rip all the dvd discs onto it.

This would be excellent but I would want to be able to stream a film direct from that drive to any of the televisions in the house.

Is there any possible way that this could be done?

Sounds like a nice little project, what language are you using? You would need some sort of server setup and another piece of hardware with the TV - a PS3, a home theatre PC etc to stream to. And a wired network to be honest.

The problem you might come up against is that, with all due respect, there is existing software out there that will probably do a much better job than anything you program yourself.

Right, Isn;t there somesort of box that I can plug into each tv and that wirelessley connects to our network which allows thew viewer to browse the files on the NAS to choose a film?
