Film4 HD to launch exclusively on Virgin Media

* High Definition films from Film4 for the very first time
* E4 HD and Film4 HD join Virgin Media’s growing HD channel line-up

Virgin Media today announced the upcoming launch of Film4 HD and E4 HD on its digital TV platform. Virgin Media’s digital TV customers will be the first to watch Film4 in glorious High Definition (HD) as the channel launches exclusively on Virgin Media this summer.

Film4 HD will offer a daily line-up of fantastic movies. The channel will showcase the very best of British film-making, including Slumdog Millionaire, Mike Leigh’s Happy Go Lucky and Ken Loach’s Looking for Eric, as well as US independent films, Hollywood blockbusters, mainstream drama and comedy, foreign films and cult cinema alongside special features, in-depth interviews and exclusive programming, Film4 is the UK’s favourite film channel.

E4 HD offers hugely popular programmes including Glee, Skins and Hollyoaks in HD and simulcasts the E4 schedule. Alongside a choice of Channel 4 commissioned programmes, E4 HD also offers a range of films and well known US series including Desperate Housewives, 90210, and Ugly Betty in HD. E4 HD is expected to launch on Virgin Media in April.

Will bring a total of 11 free (XL package) HD channels to VM once they all launch this year. And i think VM will be announcing even more in the coming months.

ITV HD in time for world cup too it seems judging by what the virgin guy is saying on twitter.

Here's hoping for sky sports too! Getting a V+ box installed in my room soon!

film4 in HD will be great. It's not as good now as it was when it was a pay channel on sky but it's still one of my most watched / recorded channels on V+.

Glad to see the price hike being used for our benefit.

pity Virgin is so localised

Got a Virgin Media envelope through my door the other day, and I thought nahhhh I cant believe this, I was right........advertising their mobile phones grrrr

Just looking at joining Virgin as well, 2 houses either side can get it but not us or our immediate neighbours. And we know there is a connection (had cable years ago) so they are sending an engineer out to have a look.

Anyone know what package they are going to go on to? If you take HD do you just get all of the HD channels?

Snap - really winds me up. I'd love to have a decent Internet connection, I live in a moderately sized town but on the edge so my ADSL is pants, but I guess better than nothing.

XL package gets all the HD channels for free. Think the L package has some but not all.

Been reading and i think E4HD and Film4HD will be free on M+ package too!

Where a Virgin getting all the bandwidth required from? It's a pity Virgin are still using the MPEG-2 codec :(.

i wondered this. I read a year ir so ago that they wouldnt be able to have any more channels as due to using MPEG2 in their boxes they couldnt get any more channels down the pipe?

Excellent news. I have just had my V+ box installed and I love it (moved from a creaky old 10+ years standard digi box). We still need Sky1 HD though. Apparently they are in arbitration over this. Hurry up :p

The new Samsung V+box can use MPEG-4 for future use. So I guess VM are preparing for some content to use it.
