Well i've ordered a 'nifty fifty' Canon EF 50 F1.8 II lens and I'm looking for a circular polarising filter or lens hood for shots in bright light and also a filter to protect the lens. I'm looking at the Hama 52mm circular polarising filter, am I right in saying it's compatible with the lens? Sorry about the noob question :)

I've just ordered the same lens! :)

I also ordered a Hoya UV / Haze filter (was only £5) as I wanted to read up on circular polarising filters a bit more.

The UV filter is mainly to protect the lens but I also noticed when taking distant photos of a lighthouse recently that there was some hazing.

Does anyone else here use a UV filter and do they make that much difference?

I have them for 3 of my lenses and never noticed much difference to be honest. Took them off my kit lens and use the lens hood instead for protection. Also have Skylight filters that do pretty much the same job.

Polariser is the only filter I have at the moment that I use a lot constructively. Trying to find a ND grad filter out here in Thailand is proving to a pain in the booty which I want for landscapes.

The filter size for each lens should be on the bottom next to a O with a diagonal slash through it usually.
