At the moment i have Cokin Filter system.. I dont think I am too impress with it.. Am wondering are Lee Filter better or any other type I should know about?

Cheers

I used some Cokin ones last year and never touched them again (they are in a bag in the loft now). They gave images a tint which was very annoying.

I just got some Lee filters and the buikd is light years ahead of the Cokin stuff. Plus they are bigger which comes in handy for my 12-24.

Best of all the adaptor ring allows the lens cap to fit back on which is handy too!

Are the lee filters as strong as the Cokin as I read somewhere that they are thing plastic rolls

Lee are also a major manufacturer of coloured gels for lighting (e.g. theatre and rock n' roll). These gels come in sheets or rolls.

The theatrical gels are handy for taping over flashguns etc, but the photographic ones are considerably more sturdy.

Do you also have lee Filter and holder??

I am thinking will the Lee Filter work on my cokin holder? Or is it best to get myself a Lee Holder but it seem big bang of mony for holder

Lee filters are too big for *** Cokin P holder. The Lee filter is very good as you can customise it to however many filters you want to put in it.

Cokin filters are know to apply a colour cast to images whereas Lee filters do not. Its a case of you get what you pay for. That said, one of my favourite images was taken with Cokin filters and I have it printed at 30x20" at home and it looks excellent.

I used a GND and an ND to slow the moving water down (it was being blwon by wind and had waves, the ND filter made it look like a mirror finish). This was one of my earlier attempts at processing this so the trees along the water front are darker than their reflection so ignore that.

Cheers mate, its one of my few landscapes! It looks superb up on the wall above my stairs :D

These are the specs for the shot:

D200 with 12-24 DX at 14mm, GND and ND filters. 1/15 second at f14.

The colour of the clouds down the very bottom is due to the water being very shallow so the mud underneath is giving it that brown tone. Also as I mentioned before you can see the reflection of trees is darker than the actual trees and thats because this was my first processing attempt and I didn't notice at the time lol

Are the LEE filter really worth the extra, are they more fool proof? What kit do you have for your LEE filer?

Cheers

They are just better quality overall and I like the fact they are bigger because I can use them to better effect with my 12-24. Every shot I ever took with the Cokins had a nasty colour cast to them except this one shot above. No idea why this one worked so well!

Plenty of people get on well with the Cokins. If your on a budget then go with them. Or failing that have a look at the Hi-Tech range of filters which fit the Cokin holder and are in between Cokin and Lee in terms of quality.

Sort of; the ones I use regularly are about 30 ft up in the roof of a hall, on the business end of a couple dozen 1 kW profile spots............. :D

In terms of Lee camera filters, though, 'fraid not.

Yes Lee filters are expensive. Fool proof? it's a filter, you use it the same as any other.

Quality wise, I think they are better. but then to buy the holder and a wide angle adaptor for a sigma cost me £80.

I could only afford a single ND grad after that, and that was £47. Theres an old saying 'buy cheap, buy twice'. I went down the Cokin system route and ended up starting again with the Lee stuff.

At the end of the day, if you are happy with the Cokin filters then don't bother upgrading.

Are Hi-Tech filters easy to get hold of? Might give 1 or 2 a try before going on Lee Wagon

Rather than making a new thread ill borrow this one if that’s ok.

I’m going to bike racing soon and wondered if any filters would be useful for me to get. Do I need any or would it be good to have some. I have no idea what filters are available nor what they are capable of. If somebody could guide me please?

Thank you

I wouldn't bother with specific filters for motorsports, you don't really need or want the various alterations that filters give you and you certainly can live without the downsides (fitting a polariser will cut out 1.5 to 2 stops of light).

As for what's available, there are quite a few threads in here that describe the various types if you have a quick search.
