OEM on the CPU is you only get the chip with no fancy box, no cooler and only 1 year warranty, compared with 3 on normal retail CPUs.

OEM on the software is more suited towards system builders and is only installed on the motherboard it was originally installed / activated on.

I understand the hardware one but not the software. So you can only install the OS once with OEM but you can install it multiple times with a retail copy?

Sorry, you can reinstall on the same system but if you change the motherboard you will require a new license.

Retail allows you to change systems without any limitations belongs you uninstall from the prevoiuse build / system.

OK, I get the theory behind it. So would it be better getting the retail 2500k for just £8 more?

EDIT: poor wording on my part.

Thanks. BTW I have a retail copy of windows 7 and installed it on a mac (gasp) using Parallels. I deleted the VM without uninstalling the OS first. Would I be able to use that copy?

That should be fine, when you change systems on the retail package you don't really need to do anything particular, deleting the install would be fine, if you get my gist :)

Trouble is that I tried to reinstall it once and it rejected the product key. Is there any easy way to check that it works?

Only thing I can think off you may of entered the code wrong  As when you install and enter the license code it will accept it as the disc does not know how may times it's been used at this point, its when you go onto activate after the installation which can fail.

That must have been it, it didn't activate. Is there any way to fix this?

If it does not activate over the Internet you can use the automatic telephone service which should be shown as a option.
