I posted a few days ago asking for advice about a workstation build for video editing and 3d design (lots of rendering, adobe, maya, C4D), I have recently been persuading into gaming too, so i've revised my build.

I was about to order a 4770k build which was very similar just a different MOBO and cooler (one you get free with the d3hp mobo). It was obviously cheaper and I was going to get a 1440p screen and a nice mouse/keyboard (I have these but want new ones) but I thought seeing as it has to last me drop these for now get a 6 core and grab these later.

So can you guys save me any money on this? I've spent so many hours researching so I don't waste my money! I'm a student and I work part time, this will be what i've saved and most of my loan/overdraft so want to get it right!

I will use it after uni to hopefully earn it all back!

This was the other cpu cooler I was considering

I think the RM series is made by someone like Chicony electronics. It is a good PSU and will deliver the full 550w on the 12v rails but the suggested PSUs are made by Seasonic which hold a better rep for PSU quality and are the same price.

If it were my money, i would go for the gold efficiency Seasonic PSU but if fully modular is a must, the RM series PSU will serve you well enough and comes with Corsairs awesome RMA support.

I'm not keen on suggesting the 290 or the 290X with their rubbish reference coolers. If you look into the software that you use, you may well find an Nvidia GPU with CUDA support to be more useful to you.

The Ivy-E CPUs might not work on the X79s mobos until their BIOS is updated and ideally you should be using quad channel RAM too. It looks like you've just swapped the CPU and mobo from a socket 1150 setup you were considering.

Just threw that together quickly. The UD3 has fewer RAM slots but it does have more sataIII ports as you might well add more storage/scratch drives to the rig down the road. The 770 GPU gives you CUDA support and also has some free games bundled with it to help sweeten the deal.

Best of luck with the build. I think you need to do a little more homework before hitting the buy button though :)

The PSU I chose said it was modular, I think! I'll go with one of the suggested though

Is the larger liquid cooler necessary? double the price! trying to save money if anything.

I pretty much did just swap them! I've been researching for about 7 hours today no joke! haha that was looking at a 4770k build comparing prices and everything then realised I should just bite the bullet and get the 6-core after seeing a comparison with some video editing software...

I was going to get quad but then I read somewhere duel is better and not just for upgradability. I forget why, I think it was something to do with overclocking and using up the bus'... I dunno ignore that!

I'll need to research CUDA. Someone suggested the r9-270/280 over the gtx770 in my first post is why I stuck with that line. I had read the 290 had poor cooling but went with it anyway :p I guess I had faith in the case ha!

Ok, I need to make a decision tomorrow and order or I never will!

honosuser, I think i'll go with your build. Apart from I think i'll stick with the duel channel ram and stick some more in later so I can have 32gb if needed!

Is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-015-NC worth getting over the h100? I hear it's quieter but noise isn't a massive issue really.

And is the Ronin case ample cooling wise? The Corsair Carbine looks like it would be crazy good!

Ok, i'll be sure to invest in a quad channel kit

Yeah I read about the BIOS update thing, I have a friend to help me do that and build the thing.

back to the graphics cards, I've heard two things. Get the GTX 770 because of CUDA and get the 280/290 because of the extra vRAM.

EDIT: Would you not recommend 32gb of ram?

Ive never used a program seriously enough to need more than 16GB of Ram, also remember that certain Windows versions have memory limits.

CUDA could be beneficial to you.

Lastly the Noctua NHD14 wont fit with tall RAM, it may even interfere with the top PCI-E slot.

Could just take a hit on the budget and have both extra Vram and CUDA with a 780. Considering their recent price drop and overall cost of your build, i would say its a worthwhile investment.

Thanks so much guys, seriously appreciate this. I've wasted MANY hours researching and changing my mind! I'll see if I can find a cheap enough 780.

Tomorrow i'll research CUDA more and make sure its worthwhile, if not i'll grab a 280x/290 (still really want the 290 despite all of its issues)

That's why I was thinking duel then quad later on but will prob just take the hit and get 4x8gb. I intend on pushing my 3D skills with some crazy scenes, after all this would hate to be low on RAM!

Don't have time to read the review just yet will tomorrow but would this PSU be enough with the 280x/290/780? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-148-AN

I have to head to work, will keep checking on this post but may not be able to reply until tomorrow.

I love the Corsair 540 too, I hope you realise I was just trying to balance things to your budget......

The Corsair 540 has basically a separate compartment for the PSU (and most of the storage drives) so a modular PSU isn't as essential as you have LOADS of room for cable management.

Stulid has confirmed everything I already told you in my post. You can use dual channel on socket 2011, it's just not making the most of the rig. If you want to add more RAM later get the same kit again and you will have 32GB in quad channel. The UD3 only has 4 DIMM slots (I said before it has fewer RAM slots) so it would make a lot more sense to go 16GB rather than 8GB as dual channel for now.

Give OCuk customer services a shout. They may well update the mobo for you, unless your buddy has a SB-E CPU this is most likely the easiest solution to getting the Ivy-E CPU working on the mobo.

All the best with it bud
