Thanks to everyone for their help so far.

Can someone please do a quick once-over and check I'm not missing anything from my basket?

Much obliged!

Looks a nice spec.

The only change I'd make is the 1TB HDD to http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279&name=Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD1001FALS)

For an extra £15 the drive has dual processors, spins a little faster, higher density so better performance and a longer warranty. 5 vs 3 years. Even though it's not your OS drive the Green is an older design now.

Not sure if the fans come with screws so you may want some of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=795&name=Acousti Ultra-Soft Arrowhead Fan Mounts - 8 Pack

Also, if you don't have any ... what about some thermal paste... Arctic silver or similar

And of course no PC is complete without a DVD writer and a memory card reader

Ha .... and an OS ... missed that too !

PS ... not familier with that board ..... does it have sockets for two PWM fans ????? usually only one PWM socket for a single CPU fan.

>> Had a quick look at a pic, can only see 3 x 3pin and 1 x 4pin PWM so you'll need to think about cooling. The case comes with 1 x 3speed molex 4pin fan which is near silent on low

The 32Mb cache Caviar is out of stock at the moment :( I might wait for it to come back - I get free delivery :)

The CPU heatsink comes with paste pre-applied, so I shouldn't need extra? I think I've still got my Arctic 5 tube left from my old build - does the stuff keep?

Good spot on the DVD drive. Something else I forgot!

Will check re: fan headers. I was previously looking at the X48, which had PWM headers for CPU and chassis - I'd best check for the P45.

AS 5 will keep. Pre applied on the cooler will be fine as it's good suff but I've had to reinstall for any number of reasons so a little spare paste is often a godsend.

Ok, looks like the P5Q has a 4-pin PWM header for the CPU, 2 chassis fan headers that are thermally controlled, and a third chassis fan header than can read the RPM but not be controlled.

As I understand it, the Antec 300s two pre-supplied exhaust fans are plugged into Molexes and have their own three-way speed switch.
Presumably, I should then plug a single PWM CPU fan into the CPU header. I can then get 2x 3-pin fans to put into the case (probably one side and one front) and plug into the chassis headers. Anything more and I'd need in-line resistors or a fan controller to prevent the noise getting a bit much...

Urgh, I see what you mean now. The tri-cool fans have a 3-speed switch. Looks like a good solution - even under load, 5 case fans should be plenty!

Sorry, I'm being a bit dim!

I think you'd have to have all PWM controlled fans for that to happen but it is an option.

With the option to install 5 fans, if you set them all to low, near silent then you won't need to adjust for gaming.

Just have the CPU fan auto (PWM) controlled ..... the rest will be plenty fine ... set and forget

I like the sound of "forget" - it's what I do best!

The Noctuas look good (but maybe a bit expensive). I'll have a look at other fans with a slow setting tomorrow.

Thanks for your help - goodnight!
