Is Final Cut Express much different than iMovie as i am thinking of getting it... I sometime find iMovies sluggish unless it my 2 years old MBP???

Can't comment on Final Cut Express (and unsure how this differs from Pro apart from the bundle it came with) but use Final Cut Pro a lot and its a universe away from iMovie in terms of functionality.
If that helps at all.

Final Cut Express will be miles better than iMovie in terms of functionality, although this will come with increased complexity. It'll take a while to master.
It shares the UI with Final Cut Pro, although has many of the features removed.
I doubt it'll help though if a speed increase is what you're looking for. You'll lose a lot, if not all, of the one-click functionality. It pretty much only supports DV as input format (well it did last time I used it), so you'll have trouble using it with most modern consumer-grade camcorders.

What exactly is sluggish about iMovie for you at the moment?

I'm using Final Cut Express and cannot go back to iMovie. The learning curve is steep and nasty at times but worth it in the end. I've achieved a good level of usability within two weeks.

I've just bought a new video camera and am looking at which software to go for... what out of interest will FCE do that iMovie can't?

Dont really want anything fancy tbh...
