Got a final demand for electricity here. For the period upto the 8th of September 07. Strange seeing as I moved in on the 11th of September. Scottish power have tried to pull this before and I rang up and explained. Now obviously I am going to have to ring them up tommorow and explain the situation but surely I won't be made to pay this. It's a rented property obviously so should I give my landlord a ring ?

You won't be made to pay it. Happened to me. Just call and say you moved in on the 11th.

Having the same problem. Called atlantic (who?) when I moved in as we are STILL getting bailiffs/final demands (have called bailiffs as well, not sure why I bother). I said I wanted to go with Powergen and had an account with them and they said fine. I've just been in touch with powergen because we've not had a bill except from when they sent me my welcome pack and apparantly atlantic have been continuing to supply us.

I have no account with them and it's still in the previous tenants name. I then got a letter yesterday finally saying final bill (from atlantic) but it's from may-december!!!! Idiots. I moved in during October.

I'd just send them a letter explaining, include the landlords contact details so that they can confirm when you moved in. If they keep pestering you i'd send a recorded letter to them detailing the situation and tell them that if they continue to harass you you'll consider pressing charges. Hopefully that would elevate your letter to a member of staff that has a tiny bit of intelligence and your problem will be resolved.

Have done so. But apparently scottish power are either retards or idiots.

or both!

different departments with different records and ideas, it'll have to be another call, hope they get the message this time.

Edit:
Can you prove you moved in on the 11th, when is your contract with landlord dated?

What charges could you press exactly?

I don't think anything criminal could come off the back of this?

Express your anger, for free. :p

Oh, and ask them about their price rises that they've kept so quiet. ;)

Put it in writing; get names of people you spoke to, record conversations. I also agree with various departments having different info, not synchronised and generally be a pain in the butt. Email a copy of tenancy agreement showing rental start date. THen tell them to cease and desist all communication or you'll report them. I can dig out legal clauses that stop such companies and bailiffs harrassing you if you want.

ANyone know if they are legally allowed to cut off electricity as that would be the only thing worrying me?

Yes I suppose both the letting agency and the landlord (who is a really nice guy) would both be willing to confirm that for me. Just really annoyed that this might go on my credit report as non payment of a bill.

Not going to happen. Before filing it as non-payment in your CR, I am fairly sure they have to take you to court first, having proven you owe them money, and also if you still cannot pay. Debt collectors also cannot come round unless they have a court action letter following having been taken to court. So, ignore scare tactics.

Consumer Action Group forum is very useful.

I take it you faxed it to them and then called them the next day to confirm that they received it and they said yes? If that's the case then they really need a talking to.

Good idea. :D

Atlantic is a brand of Scottish and Southern Energy. It is up to you to call the current supplier of the property and provide them with some details and meter readings although this is usually done by the previous tenant. Did you take any when you moved in? If not they will estimate your final read, and you will owe them for the period leading up to Powergen taking the supply over as it isn't instant.

As said above, fax tenancy agreement and also provide some meter readings when you moved into the property.

Yeah supplied all of that when i moved in.

Harassment, I think it would be more civil then criminal. I don't think anyone would actually go so far as to actually try and goto court over this but the mention of it should hopefully prompt someone to look over the case and see whats what.

I rang them, gave them the readings, my name and everything. They said I would receive a bill for ~£10 at most at some point, but not to worry. Never received anything and now I have to do all the chasing and pay to call them etc. for their mistake!
