Square Enix has gone PC. On the first day of the show, the Japanese game publisher announced that Final Fantasy XIII is coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (in Europe and North America only) and PC. During a press conference following the Microsoft event, Final Fantasy XIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase discussed the new development strategy that Square Enix has taken with its upcoming games.

Aside from the new The Last Remnant game, which is being created for Xbox 360 and PS3 using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 externally, all new internally-developed games from Square Enix, including Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Versus, and an untitled new massively multiplayer online game, utilize the new PC-based Crystal Tools development environment. These tools allow development teams to create cross-platform games.

"The content will be the same on all platforms," said Kitase. "However, we have yet to determine how many discs will be required for the 360 version. We'll have to consider the differences between formats. Currently the game is being built on PC, where it's actually functional. We're still focusing on making it work on PS3, so it's difficult to know how long the process of taking it to 360 will take."

Thanks to the new PC development platform, Kitase added, "Now that we're developing on a PC base, the pace is going a bit faster," Kitase said. "We haven't introduced new footage of the game, but we should be able to show something new in the near future."

Square Enix showed the beautiful pre-rendered trailer for Final Fantasy XIII at the end of the Microsoft press conference. The publisher has a big event scheduled for Tokyo next month where the first new information will be revealed on all Final Fantasy titles. Previously, the publisher released its online game, Final Fantasy XII, on Xbox 360 and PC.

YES! You just made my day, I no longer have to shell out for a console and can just play the glorious, glorious FF on my PC :D

I don't even care if I have to buy a new 1tb hard drive just to fit the game on :D

Manage to miss this bit of E3 news, but its gonna save me shelling out on a ps3, simply great news :D

Theres no new news here, if you look it's the stuff from E3 just repeated, it doesnt actually say there will be a PC version, only whoever wrote that article has taken it to mean there will be a PC version.

There was certainly no PC version announced at E3 thats for sure.

To be honest this wouldn't surprise me in the least, Microsoft doesn't exactly make its platforms difficult to migrate to.

will be getting this on ps3 same with fallout 3 as well. my pc prolly not beefy enough to handle it on v.good settings

At long last. I've been kicking myself for not being able to play the later FF games due to not having a console, but now it doesn't matter. And what makes it better is it won't be a below par port like 7 and 8.

Hold your horses everyone. Just because the game is being developed on PC - that doesn't mean it will be released on PC. If you read the article above a PC release was never confirmed it's just being used as a development tool.

What he said, I would have expected a much bigger fuss if it had actually been confirmed for a PC release.

That seems to indicate that they are running it on PC then porting it over to PS3 and X360. It'd be very odd to have the game running on PC yet not publish it.

The depends on the connection between Square and Sony. Some serious money and dealing would have to have gone on to allow the 360 into the party, allowing the PC in too could see the potential customer base for the Sony/FF partnership fall to a third of previous titles.

I can see Sony investing a lot in making sure this DOESNT make it to PC.

Sonys main rival is the 360. If square have been able to get it released on 360 then the PC should be relatively easy to get.

FFVII made a PC release, as did VIII..9 and 10 may have been too difficult to port or whatever, so i see no commercial reasons why it wont be released on PC this time, if thats the initial dev format...

Halo started it's development life on a Mac. Doesn't mean a thing.

All launch Xbox 360 games did becasue of the CPU.

If they're using the PC as the lead platform, the game is already up and running and Microsoft haven't paid them any money. I don't see any reason why it won't show up on the PC.

I forgot that Macs were generally used for Xbox (Edit: 360) development. Halo was a slightly different case. IIRC Halo started life as an RTS intended for the Mac. Microsoft saw potential and bought the developer.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if FF XIII turns up on the PC. I just don't think it's by any means certain until they actually anounce a PC version.

Square were asked about a PC version at E3 and they stated it was 'to be decided'. I've not seen anything, aside from rumour, to suggest that their position has changed.

Edit: D'oh! I was talking about Halo 1 on the original Xbox...
