Just thinking about how much I loved the ff's on ps1 and ps2, and us not having anything similar for pc.

Is FF14 worth a shot since I love these games? Turnbased combat in a mmo just sounds bizarre, like polite fighting.

I'm guessing thats how the pvp works. It sounds like an abomination.

I hear theres no monthly fee at the moment though, so is it worth trying do you guys think?

There's no PVP, and there probably never will be any.

Combat is not turn-based - originally it had no auto-attack (you had to input individual "standard attacks" manually) but that was changed in a recent update. Combat is real-time, but much slower than most other MMORPGs (Not as slow as FFXI, though). One-handers attack every ~2 seconds and two-handers every ~4 seconds.

The servers are all in Japan - by design - and the entire client interface is reliant on the servers, so you'll hit a button and have to wait 1-2 seconds for a response regularly.

The keyboard/mouse experience is pretty diabolical, so unless you've got a 360 controller or are willing to buy one, don't bother.

The entire game is undergoing a massive redesign at the moment and today SE are releasing patch 1.19, which includes Chocobos, Airships, an instance to battle Ifrit (trying to make it FEEL like an FF game...) and more importantly, fixing the battle system. Until now, every attribute except for VIT did nothing. STR didn't increase physical damage, DEX didn't increase accuracy, INT didn't increase magic damage, etc.

In my case, this meant my Conjurer's Thunder/Fire etc. did just as much as his Thunder II/Fire II, for half the MP cost, and with half the cooldown and casting time.

Is it worth picking up? Yeah, if you can get it for ~£5 as I've seen on some sites. The game's going to be free to play for a while at this rate - it's quite playable already, just don't expect anything near the polish of say, WoW.

I really want to try this again but I have no faith what so ever that they will get it right.

If I read some new reviews raving about how great it was I might be tempted but until that point i'm staying well clear!
