I have 7 and 9. They both work well for me using a Xbox 360 controller. The graphics of characters and in game objects are better, but other than that, it feels like the same game. I can't recall having any crashes or anything on 7, and I'm currently playing through 9 without any issues (Windows 10) so far!
The original pc release had nasty sounding midi conversions that weren't great, requiring mods to put right. The later releases had original PS1 audio so much better. I bought the Square Enix release rather than Steam.
It's also possible to mod the PC versions with hi Res packs and what not, can be a fiddle to set up but makes the in game and battle models look much better. There's quite a few mods out there.
There are also mods to fix the dodgy translation. Although saying that I found I actually missed some of the odd lines and names of items / materia / people.
Some of you PC gamers will probably remember that Final Fantasy 9 and 10 never made it onto the PC - they were PSX / PS2 only.
Some of you will also know that Final Fantasy 7 and 8 got re-done for the Steam platform some 5-odd years ago.
This is a heads up that I recently found out that 9 and 10 also got re-done for Steam, so it means that they're now playable on the PC! Square Enix have a Steam sale on at the moment so I bought 9 and 10. I'm also tempted to get the fairly recent World of Final Fantasy. Don't let the title fool you - it's not an MMO, but instead a wink back to the retro turn-based style of 7 and 8 Everything seems to be half price so the £30 World of Final Fantasy is £15. Sale ends on Monday.
For controllers, I recommend using a Sega Megadrive joypad or a SNES joypad. Obviously needs to be USB and / or bluetooth compatible.
