I bought FF8 for a bit of nostalgia a few days ago however it doesn't work on my ps3. I've googled the problem and its apparently hit and miss as to whether or not the game will work.

Basically, I start the game, the Playstation logo loads and then the screen goes black.

Has anyone on here faced this problem and managed to fix it? Its driving me nuts!

**** ****ing **** ****!

I was going to get a new copy of ff8 to play on my ps3 cause it always dies before i finish it :(

I'm doomed never to finish this game :(

Easiest way to fix it? Whip out your old PS1 or PS2 if you have them. Sure it may be more hassle and take up more room, but at least you are guaranteed no problems playing the game (Including any other oldies), ..........unless the console is dying :p.

It really depends on your luck, which model PS3 you have, or what firmware version it uses. For some people the game works, for others it doesn't. :(

Yeah, i'm tempted to pick up a ps2 in the next couple of days. Gave my old ps2 to my sister as i'd sold most of the games for it and thought the PS3 would do me for Ps1 games. I was wrong :(.

Problem for me is the price of a ps2. £100 odd seems a bit much.

Yeah it just so happens that FFVIII happens to be one of the few PS1 games with compatibilty issues for the PS3, and even in some cases the PS2. So a potential double disappointment in waiting. Although I myself have no problems with it on the PS2.

It is a shame the PS2 price cuts Sony announced do not include the UK into account. Damn our stupid weak £.

Thats abit disappointing :(.

Apparently its all down to the codes on the side of the case. For example, my version code SLES-02080 is one of the hit and miss codes on the ps3. Hopefully it'll work on the ps2.

Mine doesnt work on PS3, but I've played it loads of times on PS2, I still have my PS2 set up purely for playing this and FFX/X-2/XII.

Get a second hand PS2, they go for peanuts :p

picked up my ps2 a few weeks ago. Slim with 2 controllers for £25 delivered from the bay :) it was bought exclusively for final fantasy 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12 :D

FFVIII is VERY tempremental on the PSP too using Sony's emulator. You have to get in and fiddle about with the game ID to get it to work. I got it to 99% success on the PSP, where it would only crash if a Visage casts scan on your team, also a small pause when attacks hit I believe.

FFVII seemed fine from what I remember. FFIX was laggy but I think that was resolved. Not stuck a PSOne game on my PSP for a while though.

FFVIII's main issue generally was that it would randomly crash. Against some bosses, Blue Magic... but nothing concrete to say "X" certainly causes a crash, just scenarios where it could happen.

I couldn't get mine to work on the PS3 either, had the same code as yours.
Works fine on my PS2.

Mine is the one nobody can get to work, and I've never had any problems. Couldn't see any differences to anyone elses system last time I tried looking.

All I can really suggest is that your disks are as pristine as possible (My FF9 jammed once on the PS3 due to scratched disks, could pass there fine on the PS2 thou)

I know when the PS3 first game out my mate was playing his FF games like crazy as his PS1 and PS2 packed up. Then one update(cant remember which one it was) broke the compability with FF8, no FF8 loading anymore and save file suck on the PS3 HDD(which also packed up a few months ago)
Even though I dont play my PS1 very often I still keep my PS2 out, plus I have a brand new unopened Slimline PS2 I brought a year ago for £40 from a well know book shop clearing it old stock. As some of my PS2 games have major graphics problems on the PS3.

Mine works?

Had a bash on FF8 a few days ago. It's a 60GB BC version if that helps.

It's more to do with software version than hardware or firmware versions. My 2 release date copies of FFVIII do not work with my 60gb PS3, though I'm led to believe that *some* platinum versions do work.
