Final Fantasy Save Problem

Hi, I want to start playing Final Fantasy VIII on my PS2 but it won't save. When I choose the memory card in the game it says 'failed to check memory card'. Not sure why this is as all my other games are saving fine. The last time I played this game was on my PS1 which i've now sold and it saved fine. Isn't this game compatible with the ps2?
Has anyone else had problems with final fantasy 8 on a ps2 and know if there is a way to fix it.

you got enough room on the mem card?

You'll need to save it to a PS1 memory card.

Grrr, I haven't got one I sold it with my PS1.

I was looking forward to playing FF8 as I haven't played it in years.

lol, the last time I played this game it took me 6 months to complete.

Indeed, I was a hardcore VIII player, I'd love to do it in one sitting tbh

Only played it twice actually, but the second time I went a bit ott, was level 60 odd by the end of the first disc

I'm also trying to play this again - but the start is really annoying me with the constatnt instructions on how to do thing - I feel like yelling yeh i know let me play now!

I got a new psone and lcd screen just to play this and 7 and 9
