I've only ever played Final Fantasy VII, although I never did finish it all...

Am thinking about picking it up again off ebay or maybe even PSN to play through on the PSP. This is after looking through Chris [BEANS] old FF VII playthrough thread... (I hate him for this) :D

It's such a classic series that I figured I'd get Final Fantasy I off the bay, just to get back into some gaming on the PSP.
The reviews look solid enough and it'll all be new to me so I might as well...

The question though...
Is it worth playing through ALL the early Final Fantasy games?
VII is a no brainer and VIII looks solid aswell.
If I like I then I notice I can get a II remake on PSP also.

Has anyone here played through them all?
What would you say is your favourite in the series?

I'm just trying to go back in time and play through some of the games/series I've missed out on. This seemed like a good place to start!

Ive been reading that thread also just ordered FFVII missis isnt going to be happy days infront of the computer lol. VIII is really good too I played IX and X but never really got into them.

VII is where the magic is though they really should do an update of it with modern day graphics but without the modern day play style.

I've played them all to completion. VIII was the worst for me, then XIII. VIII had too many whiny emo girl men in it and I did not like the draw system.

I second 7 and 10!

Completed 7 100% recently and now have it on my phone so play it every now and then :)

Was on amazon tonight getting a guide for 10 as I couldn't find mine :(
Love 100% Ff, plenty of hours to play!

I liked IX - a brief return to old school gameplay after the revolutionary 3d of VII, the overused cutscenery of VIII and the visual splendour of X. Currently playing through XIII which I think is great. The linearity isn't for everyone, but I just find the storyline and tactical battling totally enthralling.

I've played them all as far as I can tell (I'm not totally sure if every old FF was ported to the GBA/DS?) - with the exception of XIV which has such poor reviews, and XI, which I suffered the trial of on 360 for half an hour.

Only really liked VII and XIII...

Had a go at VIII immediately after VII and hated it (Don't shout at me;)), then I tried IX which I was quite enjoying, but I got side tracked and never got back to it. Perhaps I'll get back to it when I'm done with the Zelda thread :D

EDIT: Tell a lie, I had III on the DS too, that was pretty good.

The amount of hours I spent on 10 was disgusting, well over 600 anyway. Wish they would re-release for ps3 amazing game.

Ive played and completed from 7 onwards, bar XI ofcourse as its an mmo and cannot be completed, XI is IMO an ok game as the community is really helpful and the guilds are great but leveling up is something you have to work at, from lvl 1-75 would take you 1 year if you were a semi casual player.
I havent played the new FF online game coming out but have heard from a beta tester that its quite bad.
Number 7 and 10 are by far the best.

Loved VII did play VIII and quite enjoyed it but found the ending rather silly and actually never bothered completing it... VII just had everything in it, and I wish they would remake it with updated graphics, would buy a ps3 specifically to play it!

You'll struggle to play FF7 nowadays to be honest, the graphics and controls are hard to deal with, they haven't aged well.

I decided to play them all through too and over the past year or so I got :
1,2,4,5,6 and tactics on GBA,
3 and echoes of time on DS,
7,8,9 on ps1 (got them when they originally came out),
10, 10-2, 12 on PS2
Crisis Core, tactics and dissida on PSP
Crystal chronicles on GC
13 on PS3

I've only had time to complete the ps1 games and I'm half way through 13 so far but the plan is to go in chronological order when time permits!

I've played them all. What I find amazing is that even the first final fantasy has that epic squaresoft feel to it. Although of course its dated as hell. I'm craving a blast of final fantasy 12. I enjoyed it, I know many didn't. Need to get myself a ps2.

I don't really agree with that. The pre-rendered backgrounds have more detail in them than many current gen games (not HD of course). The other stuff (sprites, world map, moving stuff etc) can be made *much* nicer looking if you run the game through ePSXe with the right filters / hardware acceleration.

Either way, still more than playable IMO.

Back OT, I still play 6 upwards. I have played 1 - 5, and while I am very glad I did play them, their replay value is smaller than the higher numeral games IMO.

Check out Chrono Trigger too :)

Me and my granfer have no trouble playing ff7 let alone ff1-6 the graphics dont bother us one bit, we love these games completly.

Also my copy of chrono trigger (DS) will be arriving tomorrow. Ive never played it before, but i keep hearing about it being an awesome game.

No need to play all really... The main flavours can be found in:

I - Always good to know how it began

VI - the best of the 2D style imo

Tactics on PSP - something different and very addictive!!

VII - the revolution! & great story & plot twist

VIII - The most enthralling imo. It really sucked me in!

(IX - If you loved I and VI this will be right up there for you, it is to me)

X & XIII- Just for how they all are now. (same as X-2 & crisis core)

It's pretty much the same in X, X-2, and XIII - I don't like them personally. - I find them FAR to linear to the point of boredom. I like to explore! XII tried it but just couldn't get into it. Wasted hours and it's very forgettable.
So the last one I really enjoyed was IX and Tactics
