I've seen this somewhere selling for £4.99. Has anyone played it? Is it any good and worth buying. Not sure what you get with the starter pack but looking for something else online play-wise to try (other than LOTRO & WoW).

I've played it recently and imho it was terrible, really bad graphics, and I had trouble with the fonts used ingame on my system. I run things at 1920x1200 due to this being my monitors native resolution. basically at high resolutions the fonts were almost unreadable. On top of this the game just seemed really poor (confusing quest system, lack of interaction with other players, really grind centric). for me there are much better games out there such as: EQ2, LOTRO, WoW etc.

It also bugged me that it installs this thing called playonline, it's practically a mini OS it installs that you have to go through to launch the game, it has it's own email client and all sorts of other rubbish it installs, it really bugged me for some reason.

The one thing I did quite like was the way you can be any class in the game that you like, so you could level you character up as a fighter type first, and then change to a magic or healer class at anytime and level up those classes (without loosing your fighter class level, you can change back). But it probably just means even more grinding.

I suppose for a fiver it maybe worth giving it a try to see if you like it though.

I've tried most of the other online games and the graphics looked ok but I might have to give it a miss now! Then again, I think for a fiver you get a free months play so it would be worth buying to try it out.

Played it for 3 years before I finally chucked it in a few months back. Good game but EXTREMELY time consuming. Plus the graphics engine looks very dated now. Ive switched to LOTRO and not looked back since :)

I've played LOTRO but couldn't really get into it. I only did the free month so perhaps I didn't give it enough time. I'm not a hardcore online player cos I can't afford the time, only an hour or so at night and maybe same again at weekends. I'm bored though so I might give it another try tonight.

LOTRO is good because I can just jump in and play it for quick bursts. With FFXI it is quite literally a massive grind. Getting to level 75 took sooooo long. Plus if you pick an unpopular class it will take even longer due to the need for teams and people wont want you in them. You can wait anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours to get into an XP party :( Its a rewarding game but only if you have lots of hours a day to play it.

Definitely steer clear of FFXI then. I quite like the style of the game, but after about level 15 it's practically impossible to level without a group. Very hardcore game to get anywhere in. It's also got a heavy dose of Cute, can be a bit hard to stomach at times.

It does suck, I was a fan of the earlier FF games, & thought a online versoin would be cool. It wasn't really, fighting the monsters was kind of cool, but 1 thing I didn't like about that is the non ranged monsters could even hit you when you wheren't right by them, I was almost out of a map plenty of times when a monster with no magic or ranged weapons that I couldn't even see was hitting me!!

Played this for a couple of years, been away for about a year and recently considered going back. Yes, it is a massive grind a very hardcore MMO but its worth the reward if you get to 75.

Very in depth story line and the fact that 1 character chan be any class they want and swap at any time is also a bonus.

Graphics are dated now but its still a good game, if you think you can get to 75 before christmas (would be difficult imo) the next expansion is coming out so could get right in to the new content.

Another advantage is that unlike WoW they don't raise the level cap every expansion so old content is still done. Stuff from the first and second expansion is still done by many many people due to the great rewards.

Basically you might aswell try it for £5 but don't expect much within the first month, the excitement starts around lvl 30.
