Hey Guys,

I decided to dig my PS2 out the other week and bought Final Fantasy XII as I've never played a Final Fantasy game before

In short, I love it. The problem is I'm very reliant on Potions and my party does not cope well with multiple enemies including a boss. Key example being JUDGE GHIS. (Dreadnought Leviathan)

I have a Gambit on to heal if damage if ally is <50 but I’m constantly using potions. I don’t have an assigned healer in my party. I’m guessing I need to spec someone as healer –can this be done in the Licences through a set path? I have heal within my magic, however always missing?

Any other tips things I should be aware of? Sorry If I sound like a complete newb, but I’m still learning this stunning game (I completed the whole sewer sequence without using a single Licence point… :D)

Mark

I would start levelling up if you keep needing to heal all the time. If you love that play FF7.

Easily the best FF game ever made, maybe even THE best game ever made.

That will tell you which licenses are which so you don't go wasting points early on if you're low on points. So if it's the cure spell you're after you would need to find white magic 1 and that will allow you to use your cure spell. There are also some licenses that will allow you to do more damage, attack faster, get +500 HP etc, so it would be worth getting some of those early on so you aren't so much of a push over.

Also get 3 of those quickenings ASAP for each of you're main 3 characters, because as you get them they will double and tripple your amount of Mana points when you get the 2nd and 3rd one, meaning you don't run out as fast.

Thanks Guys,

I don't suppose there is a way of resetting the License points mid-game? or have I got to start a new game?

Unless you are completely stuck in an area where you cannot go back, which I don't think should be a problem from my memory of this game, then the only way really is to go back and forth between areas and grind up some monsters for more License points or EXP.

There's no point in resetting them (and you can't anyway), just kill more monsters to get more LP, and eventually there will be an accessory that you can buy that will double the amount of LP you earn from monsters. It can be gotten earlier then normal by doing some of the side quest stuff earlier then usual, but it is a lot of effort when you could just play the main story and get the same result in a similar amount of time.

It might be worth using a walkthrough if you're interested in the sidequest stuff because it will tell you when and where to do them so you don't miss out on them by advancing the story, though the important and worthwhile quests aren't time sensitive anyway.

You'll eventually need a to get/read a guide anyway (The official guidebook is still available) especially if you want to know how to get the most powerful weapon in the game, the Zodiac Spear. It is virtually impossible to do it without one as the procedures to do so are quite stupid. For example, if you already opened up the treasure chest outside Old Dalan's place, you're screwed. The same can be said for how to activate certain sidequests and knowing where they trigger. Some of the rare monsters can be hard to find.

Was going to start again last night but decided to grind up just before I got to JUDGE GHIS on the airship.

I spend over a hour or so grinding and assigning license points to my characters, Some I've doubled in health. I jumped about 4-5 levels. Once I was happy I went over to the boss and killed him on the first go. Used two Mists and the rest were physical attacks after I killed off the two guards.

Cheers guys :) Fantastic game.

Yeah the Dreadnought Leviathan areas are a great place to run back and forth to level up, and the soldiers are pretty easy.

Oh and incase you didn't know, as for Mist Quickenings, if you have fast reactions, always keeping chaining as many Lvl.1's as you can (With a couple of Lvl.2's in the process), once a Mist Charge appears for a character, do so and then you can rinse and repeat until the timer nearly runs out, which then you can end with a higher level one.

It is ridiculously powerful if you do this as you can get much more damage output in the end than just doing one or two Lvl.3 and a few Lvl.1's for example. And with certain combinations in the chain, you can also get a Concurrence bonus that adds more damage.

A few times I would managed to trap and kill a boss by starting the battle with a massive Quickening chain and it just cannot do anything.

More about Quickenings here.

I'm playing through the game at the moment and quickenings are insanely helpful. I would actually go so far as to say that they break the game or at the very least turn the game into easy mode.

All i do when i go into a boss battle is launch a quickening chain immediately, and when it's over i either switch out a character for one with a full mp bar or replenish the mp of one with an ether or other mp restoring item.

Because of these options I can just launch another quickening chain. If you make sure you have a plentiful supply of mp restoring items and you're quick on your toes you can keep pulling off quickenings indefinitely for the duration of most major battles.

A fun little game. People might disagree but if you play FF 7-13 in the order that they were released you can tell that the battle system has improved over time, although it's not perfect. I like the fact that FF12 keeps you in the action, but i also find the battle system rather slow at times. I like the Paradigm Shift system from FF13/13-2 as it moves at a nice, fast pace. I think a combination of 12 and 13's systems would be ideal for any future titles.

Yeah it is just an abusable "cheat" you could say.

But honestly though when you look at some previous Final Fantasy's, they aren't that different and you can abuse some of their systems as well.

For example FFVII with it's Mimic Materia with Cloud and Omnislash, or FFVIII by leaving a character in the yellow, and just spam the Triangle button until the bling comes up and use as many times as you want.

Battles can be slow at times in FFXII, but really, that's also because of it's MMO-esque nature of it as well, just stand about and wait until the turn and animation comes.

A combination of XIII and XIII is something I would also like to see too. The fast speed and pace of XIII, but mixed in with the free movability of XII. Might as well be something similar to the Tales of games then, but without the button hack'n slash elements.
