hello i bought final fantasy XIII today and i was wondering do i need to go back to the very first one that came out for some 20yr console to get the story and if not which one do i need is it 7 for the ps1 thanks

There are aspects that are similar between the series, such as the fire summon Ifrit is in many of the games, however they are completely different stories. Also FF XIII is very different style to the PS1 games.

Not really necessary since the only ones that carry on from each other are hyphenated with -2 after the number (or in XIII's case, the second sequel is just getting a subtitle instead), but if you really like the series it might be worth starting from the first to see how the games and stories have developed over time. As OTS said the main similarities between the games are the Summons as well as spells and a few comic relief characters (though Biggs and Wedge don't appear in XIII/XIII-2 from what I've seen). The only overarching story that is present in most if not all the games is that of the Crystals and their power in the universe.

i might get some of the old one some time but im sitting here like a child trying not to play this do you think it would be ok LOL i sound like baby

Yep as others have said, each Final Fantasy game is different.

Each game uses a common theme that is famously associated with the series (Crystals, Chocobos, Summons, Gil currency, good vs evil, romance, melodrama), but the story, characters, worlds, universes, mythologies, some system mechanics, whatever, are told differently.

You won't miss anything story wise in starting with XIII, but while I thought it was quite good, VII is by far the best - it's only about £7 on PSN, so get it now!!

Gameplay may have been very limiting for the majority of the game (Essentially was a tutorial for most of it), but it's story and universe are something that I actually liked about it.

If you are an impatient person like the majority of people I see who've played and hated this game, and usually skip the cutscenes or not read the Datalogs, then they will be missing a lot.

There's quite some deep subjects and themes with religious undertones, something which was also similar in FFXII, another well reviewed but marmite type of game.
